Sophomores
Mason Waite and
Ty Naaykens scored goals in the second and third period to bring the game to within one, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team could not find a third goal to comeback, as they fell 3-2 to Colgate in game two of the ECAC Quarterfinals at Appleton Arena on Saturday.
St. Lawrence sees their 2022-23 season end at 17-19-0, while the Raiders improved to 17-15-5 and will take on Quinnipiac at the ECAC Semifinals.
Game two opened at a torrid pace with both teams trading chances. The Saints nearly scored minutes in, where in a two-minute stretch had six quality shots that were turned aside.
Momentum shifted late in the third period when a Colgate forward ran into a St. Lawrence defender. The Raider bench would call for a review of the play, which came back as a five-minute major for interference.
With the five-minute major, Colgate would eventually break through as Ethan Manderville found the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. The Raiders would double their lead just 45 seconds into the second period, as Alex DiPaolo cashed in on a loose puck in the Saints defensive zone.
St. Lawrence ratcheted up the pressure putting eight shots onto Carter Gylander in the next five minutes. Colgate instead would score to make it a 3-0 game. A loose puck was picked up in the Raider end by Daniel Panetta and ushered up to Matt Verboon, whose back hander snuck by
Emil Zetterquist.
The Scarlet and Brown would finally strike just 20 seconds after the goal to make it a two-goal game once again. A bouncing puck in the neutral zone was scooped up by Waite, who immediately charged up the ice. The sophomore blueliner would unleash a laser past Gylander to breathe life into the Saints.
Shortly after the goal it seemed as if Colgate scored their fourth of the game, but the play went to a review as Tommy Bergsland went high with a cross check to the head of senior captain
Jordan Steinmetz. After the review, Bergsland and Steinmetz were each issued a five-minute major and game misconducts.
The Saints outshot the Raiders 15-4 in the second period, but could not get their second.
With the Colgate defense on shaky ground, the Raiders fell into a 1-3-1 trap to try and prevent the Scarlet and Brown attack. It looked as if St. Lawrence had scored five minutes into the third as
Max Dorrington beat Gylander. This play was also reviewed and disallowed as a Colgate defender pushed a Saints defender into the goaltender resulting in an interference.
The Scarlet and Brown finally got one back with 2:32 left in the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity.
Cameron Buhl and
Luc Salem passed the puck back-and-forth at the top of the offensive zone before Salem laced a shot at the net. Naaykens was in perfect position to tip the shot past Gylander. In the remaining time, the Saints fired off six more shots but could not complete the comeback.
Zetterquist finished the game with 16 saves, while Gylander stopped 31 shots.
Colgate would go 1-for-2 on the power play on the five-minute major, while St. Lawrence was afforded just one power play and went 0-for-1.
The Scarlet and Brown outshot the Raiders 33-19 in the game.
Colgate will advance to play Quinnipiac in the ECAC Semifinals in Lake Placid next weekend.
