Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints Drop Game One To Colgate 4-3 In Overtime

The Saints scored three times in the first period, but a rally from the Raiders handed the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team a 4-3 overtime loss to Colgate in game one of the ECAC Quarterfinals on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

St. Lawrence fell to 17-18-0, while the Raiders improved to 16-15-5.

The Scarlet and Brown started the game off hot scoring nine minutes and thirteen seconds into the game. The play was started by Mason Waite, who carried the puck into the Colgate zone. The defender skipped a pass to Tomáš Mazura, who one-touched it back to Cameron Buhl. Buhl rifled the puck off the far post, but Waite was there to jam in the loose puck giving St. Lawrence the 1-0 lead.

Moments after the first period media timeout the Saints would strike again off an offensive zone draw. Max Dorrington won the faceoff deep in Raider territory back to Jan Lasak, who ushered a pass back to Tucker McIntosh. The junior defender unloaded a shot that found its way through a Dorrington screen and past Carter Gylander to extend the lead.

A little over two minutes later, Lasak earned his second assist of the game as he skipped an outlet pass up to senior captain Aleksi Peltonen, who beat two Colgate defenders and burnt Gylander to take the 3-0 lead into the intermission.

The Saints had numerous opportunities to score their fourth early in the second period, but a penalty on the Scarlet and Brown started to turn the momentum in favor of the Raiders.

Eight minutes into the second period Colton Young found his brother Alex entering the St. Lawrence zone, who beat Emil Zetterquist to make it 3-1. Five minutes later, Reid Irwin was at the blueline where he sent a changeup through traffic to bring the score to 3-2.

Colgate ended up tying the contest nearly halfway through the third period when a Nick Anderson shot was deflected at the cross bar by Daniel Panetta and in to complete the comeback.

The two teams traded blows back-and-forth on their way to an overtime period.

The Scarlet and Brown had the better of the extra period outshooting the Raiders 7-4 in attempts in the opening four minutes and 14 seconds.

Colgate would eventually take the game as Ross Mitton found Colton Young on a break. Young sent a backhand shot over Zetterquist to give the Raiders the win.

Zetterquist stopped 33 shots for the Saints, while Gylander posted 28 saves for the Raiders.

Colgate held the 37-31 edge in shots and had the favor in power plays with five to the Saints three. Neither team would take advantage on the power play.

The two teams will lineup again at Appleton Arena tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. with the best-of-three series on the line.
