Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Fall to Thoroughbreds in Overtime

Jackie Malley scored 17 points and Caelan McHarney had a season high 10 as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball lost to Skidmore in overtime on Friday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Skidmore led after the first quarter and pushed their lead to seven in the second. The Saints closed the half on a 12-5 run to even the score at 30.

In the third period Cam Roberts hit a pair of jumpers to give the Scarlet and Brown their biggest lead, seven, three and a half minutes into the third quarter. Skidmore answered with nine of the next 11 and tied the game at 44 with ten minutes left. The teams exchanged blows throughout the fourth, never separating by more than four points. Hannah Van Dyke hit a jumper to give the Saints a three-point lead with under two minutes to go, but Julia Blanck scored three for the hosts to tie the game and send it into an extra period.

Skidmore scored quickly to take the overtime lead. Olivia Barringer scored a layup to even the score, but the Thoroughbreds reclaimed the lead 18 seconds later and never relinquished the lead to hold on for the 70-64 win.

"We played really well tonight," said head coach Dan Roiger, "even without our top player. We gave the number two team in our league everything they could handle. We just needed one more something, one more rebound, one more deflection, one more jumper, one more layup, one more something. Great effort tonight by the Saints, I'm really proud of them."

Julia Blanck had a 16-point, 20-rebound double-double to lead the Thoroughbreds, and Kate McCarney and Cassie Davidson also finished with double digit scoring.

Van Dyke had eight points and six rebounds for the Saints. Katie Chisholm also grabbed six boards while scoring four points.

Skidmore improves to 19-5 and 15-2, while the Saints fall to 13-10 and 9-8 in the league. With one game remaining, the Saints are tied for fourth place, but RPI holds the tiebreaker.

The Saints will play RPI in the first-round of the playoffs, and who will host will be decided after the last day of league play happens tomorrow, when the Saints play at Union at 2 p.m.
