Max Dorrington was able to tie up the game with an extra-attacker goal in the final 30 seconds of regulation, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team would fall 3-2 to a Colgate overtime goal on Friday night in the Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y.
St. Lawrence fell to 15-16-0 with the loss and 10-9-0 in ECAC play, while the Raiders improved to 14-14-3 and 11-7-1 in league action.
It didn't take long for the Scarlet and Brown to draw first blood in the contest scoring 3:28 in. Armed with a power play opportunity,
Greg Lapointe fed a pass into the Colgate crease area where
Cameron Buhl would get the shot on net. The rebound from Carter Gylander found
Justin Paul, who was there to bury the loose puck and give the Saints the early lead.
Not long after the St. Lawrence tally, the Scarlet and Brown would head to their first penalty kill. The Saints would kill off the minor but were not out of the woods as they were faced with two more minor penalties in the period.
St. Lawrence's penalty kill remained sharp killing off all three but were faced with a fourth kill with 1:08 left in the first after a video review ended in a five-minute major.
The major would prove costly for the Saints, who finally relented in the second period. At the 1:58 mark of the second, Reid Irwin's shot ping-ponged off Alex DiPaolo,
Emil Zetterquist, and the post before going in to tie the game at 1-1.
St. Lawrence would regain some momentum in the period with two power play attempts. Lapointe and the Saints would proceed to pepper the Raider net but could not break the tie.
Zetterquist proved to be the star of the period making two highlight reel saves and eight total to keep the game at 1-1 at the second intermission.
The Scarlet and Brown would turn up the pressure in the shots department in the third as they hunted for a goal. Lapointe had two great chances early in the third, but instead, it was Colgate at the 7:13 mark, who broke the tie when Arnaud Vachon's seemingly harmless shot snuck its way between Zetterquist and the post to make it 2-1.
St. Lawrence's chances looked slim as they went on the penalty kill with three minutes left in regulation.
The Saints would kill off the penalty and go on the 6-on-5 with Zetterquist off to the bench. With the extra skater,
Luc Salem rifled a shot wide that was collected by
Philippe Chapleau. The defender would usher the puck off to Dorrington, who carried the puck to the top of the zone. The junior would laser a shot through traffic and over the shoulder of Gylander to tie the game at 2-2.
The 3-on-3 overtime period saw just two shots on goal on six attempts. St. Lawrence feverishly attacked in hopes of a game-winner but got caught in the offensive zone giving up a 2-on-1. Colgate's Nick Anderson carried the puck into the zone and fed a cross ice pass to Ross Mitton, who secured the game-winner and the second league point with 12 seconds left in the period.
Zetterquist finished the game with 22 saves in 64:26 of ice time, while Gylander stopped 20 of 22 shots that came his way.
Both teams were able to capitalize on the man-advantage with the Saints going 1-for-3 and the Raiders going 1-for-6 in 13 minutes of power play action. Colgate held a narrow 25-22 shots advantage in the game.
The Skating Saints will continue their hunt for the fourth seed tomorrow when they take on No. 11 Cornell at Lynah Rink.
