The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell 61-55 to the Skidmore Thoroughbreds Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The loss drops the Saints' record to 1-1 in conference play, and 1-5 overall.
"Although we came up short today on the scoreboard, I was really happy with our physical effort and energy," head coach
Dan Roiger said. "We had a poor start defensively with mental mistakes and we dug ourselves a hole that we almost got out of, but not quite. This weekend we executed the game plan much of the time, but to beat a top-level team it needs to be just a bit more. Our young squad is learning and gaining great experience."
The Saints were badly outscored in the first quarter, trailing by 13 points through one. But they flipped the script on their opponents for the second, outscoring them 15-11 and only trailing 32-23 in the game. They kept it close in the third quarter and outscored Skidmore again in the fourth, but ultimately ran out of runway.
Elizabeth Flynn continued her impressive rookie campaign, leading the Saints in rebounds once again with 11, while
Margaret Dougher and
Cam Roberts tied for the team lead in points with nine. Three others had eight points in what was a balanced offensive effort for the Scarlet and Brown.
The Saints have a quick turnaround before facing Clarkson Wednesday at Burkman Gymnasium, with the game beginning at 5:30 pm.
