Saints Ride Hot Start to 12-Point Win Over Clarkson to Cap Off 2023

Fresh off being named Saint of the week, Elizabeth Flynn turned in another noteworthy performance Wednesday night in the U.S. Route 11 battle as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team registered their second conference win of 2023-24 with a 73-61 win over Clarkson.

The win is their second of the Liberty League season, pushing their record back above .500 at 2-1 and improves their overall record to 2-5.

"We did a great job of ball movement and player cuts to build our lead early in the game," said Dan Roiger, Saints head coach. "After that we started taking the first shot instead of being patient and we were very complacent on defense as we coasted to the victory. But it was a nice game to get our whole roster some playing time and we had some nice performances.  I thought Mason (Baker-Schlendering) had an excellent game and took some nice steps forward in her development on both ends of the floor."

St. Lawrence began the game on a strong foot, going up 8-2 early in the first quarter. They continued to outscore the Golden Knights and extended their lead to 19-7 after the first quarter.

Then, Flynn had six straight points to kick off the second quarter and extended St. Lawrence's lead to 21 right off the hop. Clarkson cut the Saints lead down, but the home side still possessed a 39-26 lead after the first half.

Clarkson came out in the second half and got the lead down to 11, before Margaret Dougher and Mason Baker-Schlendering had points to extend the Saints lead again. The lead remained double digits until Cassidy Dumont hit two three-balls in two possessions to bring the Saints lead down to eight.

That was the closest the Golden Knights would get, however, with Caelan McCormack and Jocelyn Ollinger hitting late free throws when Clarkson was fouling to stop the clock late in the game.

Flynn's 12 points and nine rebounds led the Saints, while Cam Roberts had nine points to finish  second on the team in that category. Caelan McHarney had seven boards of her own to finish third on the Saints. Baker Schlendering's seven points and six rebounds earned the praise of her coach after the game.

The win sends the Saints into the holiday break on a high note. After losing each of their first four games, they've rattled off two wins in their last three games ahead of a Tuesday, Jan. 4 game against SUNY Canton on the other side of the new year.
