After outscoring Rensselaer by 17 in the second half, the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team rode big performances from
Jackie Malley and
Elizabeth Flynn to record their first win of 2023-24, 62-54.
Flynn had a monster day in the paint, recording 20 boards for the Saints. Malley led the team in points with 15.
The win came amid some adversity for the Saints, where they trailed the Engineers by nine points before ultimately mounting a comeback to take away the important victory. That improved their overall record to 1-4, and makes them 1-0 in Liberty League play.
"We learned some things at halftime today and played with some college-level expectations and intensity," said
Dan Roiger, the Saints head coach. "We had some nice and significant contributions from a number of players in the game. Each of those plays separately matter, but taken in whole make the difference in a tight game."
St. Lawrence had an early 5-0 lead but Rensselaer turned the tables on the Saints, taking a 10-point lead at 3:08 of the first, and had a 20-11 lead after the first. They led by as much as 14 in the second half.
Then, St. Lawrence caught fire in the second half, outscoring the Engineers 17-6 in the third and riding that momentum to an eight-point win over RPI to kick off their conference season.
The Saints return to action with a quick turnaround, playing their second game in 24 hours at Skidmore with a 2 p.m. start against the Thoroughbreds.
