Adam Dudzinski and
Gavin Macaulay shared the bulk of the offense for the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team, as they opened their quest for a Liberty League title defense with a convincing non-conference win over SUNY Potsdam 87-53.
The 34-point win margin comes a year after the Saints downed the same Bears team by just nine points in their second game of the season.
"It was a good start to what is a long season," said head coach
Chris Downs, who began his 26
th campaign patrolling the Saints' sideline. "We will need to keep moving forward. We're excited to get back into the gym Friday and in front of our home fans next week."
Despite the large gap on the scoreline, the Saints did not lead the game wire-to-wire. The Bears kicked off the game by going up 7-3 on the Saints in the early going, and held their lead for the first six minutes of the game.
Later in the first, down 9-7, the Saints then enjoyed an 8-0 run to take the lead. This included back-to-back threes from
Gavin Macaulay and
Carter Storey as the Saints went up 15-9 and never looked back from there.
The Saints went on to outscore the Bears by 17 points in both the first and second half of the game.
The sophomore transfer Dudzinski had 19 points in his first game as a Saint, which tied with
Gavin Macaulay for first on St. Lawrence.
Andrew Cowan had the best game statistically on the defensive side of the ball, registering a team-high eight rebounds and seven defensive boards.
The Saints will return to action with their home-opening contest Tuesday, Nov. 14, when they face off against Plattsburgh State. Opening tip at Burkman Gymnasium will be 7:30 p.m.
