A pair of power play goals in the first period and a pair of goals in the third from the Broncos sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 4-0 loss to No. 15 Western Michigan on Saturday night in Lawson Arena.
St. Lawrence fell to 3-10-1 on the season with the loss, while the Broncos improved to 8-3-1.
The Saints came out of the gate well in the game getting the first great chance of the contest. The Scarlet and Brown caused a turnover behind the Bronco goal, which left Cameron Rowe out to dry. However, they were not able to cash in on the unattended net.
Moments later, a penalty sent Western Michigan to the power play where they would score to make it 1-0. Shortly after, a tripping penalty was called on a hip check by the Saints which led to a Tim Washe tally and a 2-0 deficit midway through the first period.
Senior captain
Luc Salem would produce a good chance in the following minutes in an attempt to cut into the deficit to no avail. St. Lawrence would head to the power play moments later after a reviewed contact to the head penalty on Hugh Larkin.
The power play was cut short by an infraction, but it led to a great 4-on-4 chance for St. Lawrence.
Felikss Gavars split the Bronco defense and raced out to a breakaway but was unable to beat Rowe in net. Gavars would get another good look but was stopped as the major ended.
In the second period, the Saints would go on the man advantage early in the period but could not find a gap in the defense.
Ben Kraws stood stall throughout the second period making a pair of great saves in close, followed by a breakaway, which he stonewalled.
Max Dorrington nearly made it a one-goal game later in the second as he was jamming a loose puck in front of the Western Michigan goal that was narrowly stopped by the pad of the goalie.
Kraws kept the game at 2-0 heading into the third with a diving save late in the period to keep the Saints in the game.
In the third period, the Scarlet and Brown would go on another five-minute power play following a second dirty hit to the head by Larkin, who received a major and a game misconduct for his vicious hit. Two Saints' penalties on the man advantage would help kill off the opportunity.
Josh Boyer would have a chance on the Bronco goal later in the period as he was out on a 2-on-1 effort. The play however was disrupted by a defender to keep St. Lawrence at bay.
Western Michigan would score an insurance goal at the 12:11 mark of the third, then would cash in on an empty net in the final three minutes to put the game away.
Kraws made 34 saves for the Saints in the loss, while Rowe stopped 30 Saints' shots in his shutout.
St. Lawrence would end up 0-for-6 on the power play with three of their chances being under two minutes long, while the Broncos scored on their first two and ended up at 2-for-4 on the night.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at home next weekend when they host Dartmouth and Harvard in their final two regular season games of the first semester.
