In what was their most even game of the season, the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 7 ranked Williams, ultimately falling 66-58 in overtime in the championship game at the Williams Purple & Gold Classic.
The Saints were tied at halftime and also again at the end of the second half, as they showed their ability to go toe-to-toe with one of the top schools in the NESCAC.
The game began with St. Lawrence taking an early lead, through strong offensive performances from
Gavin Macaulay,
Adam Dudzinski and
Carter Storey. Dudzinski and Macaulay had a team-high seven points in that quarter.
Storey and
Aidan Macaulay had big plays for the Saints to give them their largest leads of the half, which were as large as 16-12. They also trailed by as much as 8-5, in a half where things remained airtight.
Williams got into foul trouble against St. Lawrence and the Saints used the opportunity to build up a lead through clutch shooting and free throw shots suddenly brought the Saints' lead to nine. They got there through free throw shooting by
Andrew Cowan at 6:04, and another clutch three by Storey kept the Scarlet and Brown's lead as large as nine with 4:36 remaining. But Williams pulled out a 13-4 run to end the half and force overtime.
The Saints again had a lead in the overtime frame, going up 58-56, but Ben McGraw hit a timely three to put Williams in the lead. They padded their advantage with free throws to pull away and win by eight.
