After being down by six points at half time, the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team pulled a second-half comeback to remain undefeated with a 60-54 win over St. Joseph's-Long Island Friday evening in Williamstown, Mass. in the team's opening game of the Williams Purple & Gold Classic.
"We faced a ton of adversity today and I'm really proud of this team's grit," said head coach
Chris Downs.
The Saints, who entered the game with a 2-0 record, received 14 points each from
Gavin Macaulay and
Adam Dudzinski.
Dudzinski, a sophomore from Syracuse, N.Y., shot 4-for-13 from beyond the arc, while senior
Carter Storey went 3-for-7.
With two undefeated teams entering the game, it was the Golden Eagles who got off to a good start and ended up with a lead as high as 15 in the first half, forcing the Saints to come from behind in the second half. With the score at 33-26 St. Joseph's-Long Island, the Scarlet and Brown outscored them 24-10 in the next 13 minutes to take a seven point lead.
It was a three-pointer from
Troy McPherson at 10:28 that pulled the Saints even at 40-40 and they never looked back from there.
The Golden Eagles got back into the game with a late run, but the Saints ultimately held them off.
