Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Margaret Napper

Saints Competitive in Three-Point Loss Against Plattsburgh State

The St. Lawrence women's basketball team fell to Plattsburgh State in their season opener game at home on Tuesday.

The loss brings St. Lawrence's record to 0-2 in non-conference play, despite only being outscored by a combined four points in those two contests.

"It was a tough result tonight after I thought we played well," said Dan Roiger, the Saints head coach. "We just shot so poorly that it looked bad. We out-rebounded them overall and dominantly on the offensive glass, we didn't turn the ball over often, played much better defense, but shooting 23 per cent in the first half and less than 10 per cent from the arc was just too much."

The women kept the score in stiff contention through the first quarter with seniors Cam Roberts and Abby Doin scoring the Saint's first points of the evening. The ending of the first quarter saw a close competition with Plattsburgh just barely ahead 14-12, however, they widened the lead to 31-21 at the end of the first half.

The Saints then slowly chipped away at their 10-point deficit, eventually tying the score at 56-56 in the fourth quarter. With minutes to go, each team put up two points as the clock ticked down. In the end, the Cardinals utilized two free throws to their advantage along with an extra basket taking home the win.

The Saints shooting improved to 40 per cent in the third quarter, but slipped back down to 31 per cent in the fourth and didn't allow them to mount a comeback in the game.

Scarlet and Brown standouts included first year Jackie Malley, who scored 17 points, with fellow first year Elizabeth Flynn, who scored 12 points. Flynn also tallied up 18 rebounds and first year Norah Niesz had four assists.

The Scarlet and Brown will have their next game against Springfield College in Middlebury, Vt. on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. with an additional game against Framingham State in Middlebury on Saturday, Nov. 18.
