A second-half comeback was capped off in the game's final minute by SUNY Potsdam, as they climbed all the way back from a 17-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to down the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team 65-64 at the season opener in Potsdam, N.Y.
The loss brings the Saints' record to 0-1, despite out-shooting Potsdam from beyond the arc by more than double, as well as out-rebounding their regional rivals 52-38 in the contest.
St. Lawrence took an early lead via three-pointers from
Hannah Van Dyke and senior
Shannon Rhone to go up 10-5, before the Bears mounted an early comeback to bring the score to 12-12.
Annie Perry's jumper then brought the Saints back into a 14-12 lead at the quarter break.
Scores from Van Dyke,
Elizabeth Flynn and
Cam Roberts put the Saints well into the lead at 21-17, and St. Lawrence held that lead into halftime. They would lead by as much as 55-38 in the third quarter.
The Bears would then slowly chip away at the Saints' lead, mounting an 11-0 run late in the fourth to go up 64-60. They ultimately held off a late big to level the score, securing a 65-64 win.
The Saints were led offensively by a youth movement, as sophomore Van Dyke finished first in points with 11, and she was closely followed by first-year Flynn who had 10 in her first game as a Saint.
St. Lawrence returns to action Tuesday afternoon when they face off in their home opener against Plattsburgh State. The game is slated for a 5:30 pm. tip.
