Senior captain
Sam Pijpers scored his second goal of the season in the 61st minute to lift the St. Lawrence University to a 1-0 win over RIT on Saturday at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The win was the fifth in the last six games for the surging Saints.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 5-3-2 with the win and 3-1-0 in Liberty League play, while the Tigers fell to 3-3-3 and 0-3-1 in the league.
"Another excellent performance today from the team against a very well-coached team,"said head coach
Mike Toshack "I couldn't be happier for the boys after a hard game on Wednesday turning around in two days and put in the effort they did today to win, it shows alot about them and their character. Very pleased for them, very happy, now we turn our attention to Vassar."
Pijpers and
Max Mogul were on top of RIT early on a rainy Saturday in Canton, N.Y. Pijpers had the first attempt of the game, while Mogul was able to generate two looks in the opening five minutes.
RIT would get the next three shots on goal, but
Ben Woelfinger stood tall to stop the attempts. The three saves vaulted Woelfinger into fifth place in the Saints' record book for career saves. The goalkeeper once again passed Sandy MacAllaster '78, who occupied fifth with 278 saves. Woelfinger now has 281 saves with the Scarlet and Brown, and is one save shy of Emilio Coletta '09, who is in fourth place, and five shy of John Mella '73 in third. Â
The Saints would once again press in the second half as first-years
Eric Edmonds and
Baker Diaz got shots that went wide of the frame.
It wasn't until the 61st minute that the lone goal of the game would come. Mogul would gain control of the ball in the Tigers end and make a run for the RIT box. The junior dished a perfect through ball to Pijpers, who snuck a right-footed strike passed Jason Trapp to give the Saints the lead.
The goal seemed to only make the team hungrier as the Scarlet and Brown got four shots off in rapid succession a few minutes later.
Henry Brown's bid was the lone bid to find the goal and was stopped by Trapp.
The Tigers were able to make a push late in the game but were unable to beat the backline of St. Lawrence.
The clean sheet is the second in a row and fourth in the last five games for Woelfinger, who now has five on the year, the most in the Liberty League. His 22nd shutout brings him one closer to Brendan Murphy '02 who has the fourth most all-time in Saints history.
The Scarlet and Brown will rest up and prepare for next weekend when the team heads down to Poughkeepsie on Friday, October 13 to take on Vassar College before turning around and taking on Bard at Annandale-on-Hudson on Saturday. Â
