Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

King-Thurber Scores the Game-Winner in 3-1 Road Win at Plattsburgh

A pair of first half goals from Meredith Donahue and Madison King-Thurber put the Saints up and they carried the lead the rest of the way as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team earned a 3-1 win on the road against Plattsburgh State on Wednesday afternoon.

St. Lawrence improved to 4-3-3 on the year, while Cardinals fell to 3-4-3.

"It was a well-rounded performance today," said head coach Sinead McSharry "I'm proud of this squad for their belief, sticking to the game plan, and making something happen in the final third."

The action started early in the contest with the Cardinals hopping onto the scoreboard just 2:50 into the game. Plattsburgh's Zoe Rice sent a perfect corner kick into the Saints' box where Sophia Hatziyianis would get a head on the ball to put her team up 1-0.

The Cardinals worked hard to double their lead after the tally, but instead the Scarlet and Brown would tie the match in the 21st minute. Zoe Rogan possessed the ball running down the left wing where she sent a left-footed cross into the Plattsburgh box. The pass landed right on the foot of the sophomore Donahue, who with a defender on her hip put a shot past the keeper and in to tie the game at 1-1.

The tie would last for 16 minutes before the Saints would strike again to take the 2-1 lead. Following a Plattsburgh foul on the St. Lawrence side of midfield, captain Mia Cence rifled a free kick all the way to the Cardinals' box. The pass connected with King-Thurber, who touched the ball past the goalkeeper to give the Scarlet and Brown the lead going into the half.

St. Lawrence continued bringing heat getting five shots off in the first 11 minutes of the second half, but it was Plattsburgh, who had the best chance as a penalty in the box put them on the dot. Keely Snode made the play of the game stopping Nora Fitzgerald's right-footed blast to keep the lead for the Saints.

The game was sealed in the 80th minute when Natalie Schock found Emma Reynolds, who buried her shot to double the lead at 3-1 and put the Scarlet and Brown up for good.

Snode stopped four saves including the clutch penalty kick in 82:22 of action, while Darcie McDonough finished off the last 7:38. Lily Bailey stopped four of the seven saves she faced in the Cardinals' goal.

St. Lawrence led the way with a 14-11 shot advantage and had a 7-5 edge in shots on frame.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action this Saturday when the Saints travel to RIT to take on the Tigers in a 3:00 p.m. match in Rochester, N.Y.
