First-year
Eric Edmonds scored the lone goal of the contest in the 87th minute to give the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Clarkson on Wednesday at Hantz Field in Potsdam, N.Y.
St. Lawrence improved to 4-3-2 with the win and 2-1-0 in the Liberty League, while the Knights fell to 6-3-0, and 2-2-0 in league action.
With the clean sheet,
Ben Woelfinger passed the great Sandy MacAllaster '78 for fifth in career shutouts with 21. The goalkeeper is now two shy of Brendan Murphy '02 for fourth and is 7.5 behind Greg Sutton '99 who sits atop the record books.
"It was a great response from the team tonight against our North Country rival Clarkson, who's having a very good year," said head coach
Mike Toshack "I couldn't ask more of the team, the effort was fantastic. It was nice to see a first-year in
Eric Edmonds bury one in the back of the net, but it was a great team effort tonight and the guys wanted it really bad. We look to kick on from here and head back to Sandy MacAllaster Field for this weekend's match."
In a tight rivalry matchup, shots were tough to come by for both teams as they combined for just four chances in the first half. Clarkson got the first three chances, which all missed the mark.
Henry Brown got the lone shot for the Saints, but his attempt sailed out to the right of the woodwork.
The action picked up in the second half where eight shots found the frame.
The Knights pressured early getting three shots on goal in the first nine minutes. Woelfinger stood tall stopping all three attempts. Later in the half, captain
Sam Peacock had a long strike find the frame, but the strike was stopped by Josh Morelli.
With time winding down, the Scarlet and Brown turned up the heat on the Clarkson back line and finally broke through. The goal was a first-year connection as
Henry Brown carried the ball in towards the Knights' box. The newcomer had defenders draped on him as he skipped the ball over to Edmonds, who buried a shot in the unattended goal to put the team up 1-0 with 3:10 on the clock.
The Knights were able to muster a pair of relatively harmless shots on goal in the waning minutes, but they could not solve the Saints' back line and Woelfinger.
Woelfinger finished with six saves in the contest, while Morelli made two saves on his end.
The squad will be back in action on Saturday as the Saints welcome RIT to Sandy MacAllaster Field for a 1:00 p.m. tilt.
