First-year Henry Brown and senior Kyle Graber connected on the games first three goals and fellow senior Sam Pijpers put on the finishing touches as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team raced out to a 4-0 senior day win against Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
Brown has been on fire this past week scoring twice against Bard last Saturday and twice today along with an assist. Graber celebrated his senior day in fashion with his first career goal and assisted on both of Brown's tallies.
St. Lawrence improved to 7-4-3 with the win and 5-2-1 in the Liberty League. The Saints, who are three points behind Hobart for first in the league standings, will take on the Statesmen next weekend with a chance at the regular season title on the line.
The Scarlet and Brown came out firing with four shots on goal in the opening 25 minutes. Max Mogul was all around the net getting three shots onto Will Devall but was turned away.
The Saints finally broke through at 25:21 with Brown's first of the game. In dangerous territory, Graber was able to send a pass into the middle of the offensive box, where Brown slid and booted the ball past Devall to claim the 1-0 lead.
Less than ten minutes into the second half, Brown would return the favor as Graber found the newcomer streaking down the right wing. Brown would settle and send the ball back to Graber, who was trailing the play. Graber would settle and fire a left-footed missile into the woodwork for his first career goal.
The two would connect once again in the 63rd minute when Graber found Brown once again in scoring territory. The first-year faked the goalkeeper and scored his fourth goal in seven days to put the Saints up 3-0.
St. Lawrence put on the finishing touches in the 76th minute when Pijpers scored off a beautiful header. Owen Lillis sent a long cross to the far post of the Thoroughbreds goal where Pijpers would finish to put the game on ice.
Skidmore was able to threaten late with three more shots, but Ben Woelfinger stood tall securing another clean sheet.
Woelfinger with the nine save shutout tied Jordan James '04 for third all-time with 24 career clean sheets. The keeper is now five shutouts behind Emilio Coletta '09 in second, and five and a half behind Greg Sutton '99, who is first all-time with 29.5.
The Scarlet and Brown will take to the road this coming Wednesday, October 25 to take on Plattsburgh in their final non-conference game of the regular season. The Saints will then head to Geneva, N.Y. next Saturday for their biggest game of the season against Hobart. With a win, the Scarlet and Brown would secure the regular season title for the second consecutive season.
