Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

McDougald Scores Off A Free Kick; Men's Soccer Battles To 1-1 Tie

Senior captain Michael McDougald scored his third goal of the season off a free kick in the 75th minute, but a late goal the other way sent the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Union on Wednesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Saints moved to 6-4-3 on the year and 4-2-1 in Liberty League play, while the Garnet Chargers went to 7-5-3 and 4-1-1 in league play.

After an initial push by Union early, where they got three shots off on the Saints, St. Lawrence would go on to dominate the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Scarlet and Brown had the first great chances to score in the opening third of the half. Sam Pijpers was able to get free in the Union defensive box and rifle a shot that was stopped by Paul Agne. Moments later, a header from first-year Henry Brown was also stymied to keep the game knotted.

Wingers Ryan Campbell and Max Mogul also had good looks later in the half but were unable to find twine with their efforts. St. Lawrence would head into the half with the 13-6 shot advantage and were up 4-2 on shots on goal.

The Garnet Chargers were able to turn the tide a bit in their favor in the second half outshooting the Saints 11-5 and 3-2 on goal, despite not having many dangerous efforts.

The scoring would finally break at 74:18 when a Union foul just outside the box would put McDougald in a golden position to score. The senior would curl a strike inside the left post and in to put the Saints up 1-0.

The lead would last less than seven minutes as the Garnet Chargers would equalize. Moments after a missed foul in the Union box by a defender on a St. Lawrence forward, The Chargers were able to force a corner on the other end. The Lucas Crowley kick bounced in the box and eventually found Lucas Montalto, who buried the shot to tie the contest.

Eric Edmonds was able to get the lone shot the rest of the way for both teams, but Agne stopped the shot to preserve the tie.

Ben Woelfinger stopped four saves in the tie, while Agne was able to stop six.

In a battle of two of the league's best, the shot totals came out to nearly even with St. Lawrence holding the 18-17 edge and 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints, however, had seven corner kicks to Union's three.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back at Sandy MacAllaster Field this coming Saturday for a Liberty League Championship rematch between them and the Skidmore Thoroughbreds. Before the game the team will honor the members of the Class of 2024 as a part of senior day.
