Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Dorrington Scores Late; Skating Saints Fall 3-1 to Vermont

Max Dorrington was able to score for the first time in this young season, but it wasn't enough, as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell to the University of Vermont 3-1 on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

The Saints fell to 1-1-0 in the young season, while Vermont moved to 1-0-0.

The Scarlet and Brown came out of the gates flying, forcing shots and early scoring chances onto the Catamount net but were unable to capitalize.

Both teams drew penalties in the first, but it was Vermont, who would capitalize on one of their three first period chances.

After Grant Adams and the Saints' penalty kill neutralized the first two chances, the third effort would end up in the St. Lawrence goal. On the man-up, Simon Jellus took a string of passes from Ralfs Bergmanis and Will Zapernick and sent a slapshot that found the back of the net to go up 1-0 at 16:23 of the period.

Vermont picked up where they left off at the beginning of the second, as Jellus scored again off a turnover with a back-handed shot beating Adams to double the lead.

Before things could settle down, the Catamounts struck again, this time it was Chris Theodore, who took a Zach Dubinsky pass less than a minute later and put Vermont up 3-0.

After being outshot 19-17 through two periods, the Skating Saints piled on the shots putting 18 on frame in the third period as they searched to get back into the game.

St. Lawrence had a great opportunity late in the third to get on the scoreboard as a video replay initiated by the Saints' bench ended up with a five-minute major for a kneeing and a game-misconduct for a Vermont player to put the Scarlet and Brown on the attack.

Dorrington would take full advantage, sneaking one by the Catamount goaltender for his first goal of the season. Tomáš Mazura would receive a pass from Philippe Chapleau on the 5-on-4 and send in a shot that was blocked in front of the net. The puck would squeeze off the block and onto Dorrington's stick, who buried the chance.

St. Lawrence would pull the goalie for the extra skater with a few minutes left in the game, but they were unable to find another goal in their effort to mount a comeback.

The Saints finished the game with the 35-27 shots advantage in the game. Both teams were able to get a power play goal on the night with St. Lawrence going 1-for-5 and Vermont going 1-for-6.

Adams made 24 saves for the Saints, while Gabe Carriere stopped 34 in the Catamount net.

The Scarlet and Brown will have a quick turnaround as they welcome No. 18/17 Penn State into town tomorrow for a 7:00 p.m. tilt in Appleton Arena.
