Nine different skaters record a point, and forwards
Julia Gosling and
Abby Hustler's three-point efforts highlighted the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team's offensive outburst in their 6-1 victory over the Brown Bears on Saturday afternoon in Providence, Rhode Island.
Â
St. Lawrence came out strong with good neutral-zone passing to keep Brown pinned in their defensive zone.
Â
First-year forward
Kiley Mastel rung the crossbar on the Saints only power-play of the game, looking for her eighth of the year.
Â
The Saints eventually capitalized on their sustained pressure late in the first period.
Â
SLU forward
Shailynn Snow fed Hustler cross-ice after the Saints defense re-grouped in the neutral zone. Hustler carried the puck into the Bears' zone. Simultaneously, Gosling crashed the net and drew the Brown defender, which left Snow wide-open in the left-slot. Huslter fed Snow, who beat Brown goaltender Kaley Doyle glove side.
Â
Saints' goaltender
Lucy Morgan was sharp when tested. Morgan and the St. Lawrence penalty-kill fended off a late Brown power-play to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Â
Morgan finished the first period with nine saves, while Doyle had 14.
Â
Brown had a better start to the middle frame. They were able to sustain pressure, unlike the first.
Â
The Bears capitalized on their third power-play of the game in the midway through the period. Brown defender Sonja Bjornson shot went through traffic and past Morgan's glove for her first career goal.
Â
St. Lawrence responded and dominated the rest of the period.
Â
Hustler extended the Saints' lead back to two, one minute and 46 seconds later. Chloé Puddifant sent a shot from the point intended for Hustler. Her tip beat Doyle back to her glove-side post and the Saints 'kept the foot on the gas' for the remainder of the second frame.
Â
The Saints had extended pressure in their offensive-zone late in the period. Forward
Rachel Bjorgan gathered the puck on the mid-boards and send a seemingly harmless shot towards net, but good things happen when pucks get on net. Her shot beat a screened Doyle near-side, who never went into the butterfly.
Â
Gosling struck twenty-five seconds after the Bjorgan goal after receiving an outlet pass from
Rachel Teslak. She entered the offensive zone with plenty of space and time. Gosling went slickly backhand-forehand and beat Doyle five-hole.
Â
The Scarlet and Brown's offense opened the floodgates, seizing complete control of the game. They outshot Brown 13-4 in the middle frame, and 28-13 through two periods.
Â
Both teams changed goaltenders to start the last period of play. Emma-Sofie Nordström replaced Morgan for the Saints. Morgan finished with 13 saves. Megane Pilon replaced Doyle in relief. Doyle had 23 saves in two periods.
Â
The goal-scoring pace of the second period slowed down in the third, but not before Gosling struck again.
Kristina Bahl dished a pass to Gosling that led her past two Brown defenders. She beat Pilon short side on the semi-breakaway to put the Saints up 6-1.
Â
Nordström was strong in her twenty minutes of action, highlighted by her breakaway stop on Bears' forward Jade Iginla.
Â
Nordström finished with 16 saves in the third, while Pilon had 15.
Â
The Saints outshot Brown 63-46 in attempts and 44-29 in shots-on-goal.
Â
"It was a nice way to bounce back after Friday's game," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We certainly have worked hard enough for some better results recently and today we got one! Some efforts and bounces allowed us to keep great pressure on them throughout the game."
Â
St. Lawrence improved to 12-16-2 and 6-8-2 in ECAC play. Brown fell to 6-16-1 and 4-12-0 with the loss.
Â
"We had some pretty goals and plays that will give us a shot of confidence heading into the back-to-back games vs. Colgate," added Wells.
Â
The Scarlet and Brown have a big week ahead as the ECAC playoff-push ramps up. The Saints travel to Colgate on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. puck-drop, and then return to Appleton to host the Raiders on Friday night. They wrap up a huge nine-point week hosting Cornell at 3:00 p.m.
