Two power play goals and a strong penalty kill powered the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-3 come-from-behind tie with the No. 4/5 Colgate Raiders on Tuesday evening in Hamilton, New York.
Anna Segedi tallied her 11th of the season on the first shot of the game, as she walked down the right side and ripped a shot over the blocker of Raiders' goaltender Hannah Murphy.
Just about four minutes after the Saints' goal, Allyson Simpson sent a shot through traffic and through the legs of
Lucy Morgan to tie the game 1-1.
Danielle Serdachney was the second to strike for the Raiders, after going end-to-end, putting a low shot past Morgan for the 2-1 advantage with 8:33 remaining in the first period.
The Saints would get the first power-play opportunity of the game and peppered Murphy with a flurry of shots, but were unable to get one past to tie the game once again.
At the end of one, Colgate held a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal.
Neena Brick scored the only goal of the second period with a deflection on the doorstep to give Colgate a 3-1 lead.
Despite the scoreboard, the Scarlet and Brown continued to apply pressure in the Colgate zone, but Murphy was up to the task. Shots on goal after the second were tied 23-23.
The Scarlet and Brown took advantage of their man-up opportunities in the third period, as
Abby Hustler and
Aly McLeod both scored on the power play to tie the game 3-3.
Hustler capitalized on a scramble in front of Murphy to bring the game back within one with 7:59 to play, and
Aly McLeod buried a rebound off the initial shot from
Rachel Teslak to knot the game up with 2:41 remaining and force the eventual start to overtime.
The Saints controlled play for the vast majority of the 3-on-3 overtime, generating multiple opportunities against the Raiders and Morgan finished with some key saves, but the game would end in a tie.
"Certainly the most exciting game of the year without a doubt," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Both teams traded chances all night long. Great plays and saves at both ends of ice."Â
"It was our best overtime as well and we had two or three chances right on the doorstep to win it," Wells added. "Our effort was excellent and it had to be to be vs. them. Colgate is always creative and dangerous on the rush."
Morgan finished with 40 saves between the pipes, while Murphy made 34 for the Raiders.
The Raiders outshot the Saints 43-37, but it was the special teams that was the star of the night, as the Scarlet and Brown went 2-for-5 on the power play and killed off all four of Colgate's opportunities.
"Our penalty kill was huge in the third and then the power play responded to get the tie! It will be another good one on Friday."
St. Lawrence moved to 12-16-3 on the season and 6-8-3 in ECAC play, while Colgate moved to 22-4-2 and 12-3-1.
These two teams will meet again on Friday when the Raiders make the trip to the North Country for a 6 p.m. puck drop on Friday, February 3. The Saints will also host #9/13 Cornell on Saturday at 3 p.m.
