Abby Hustler scored the Saints' lone goal on the power play, but the second-ranked Yale Bulldogs topped the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 6-1 in ECAC action on Friday night at Ingalls Rinks in New Haven, Connecticut.
The Bulldogs took the early advantage off a goal from Naomi Boucher at 6:23 of the first period. The Saints would hold Yale to just one in the first, as the Scarlet and Brown held a 5-3 lead in shots on goal after the first 20 minutes of play.Â
Yale used a strong second period to build its lead over the Saints with goals from Elle Hartje, Claire Dalton, and Carina DiAntonio for the 4-0 lead.
Anna Bargman would score and DiAntonio tallied her second of the night to put the Bulldogs up 6-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the third period.
With 6:20 to play in the third and just about 18 seconds into the power play,Â
Kristina Bahl and
Julia Gosling played a little give-and-go, Gosling then worked her way into the slot, fired one on net and Hustler tipped it past Pia Dukaric for the Saints' lone goal.
"We had a real good first again and had five chances on our power play to start the second and the puck stayed out," said head coach
Chris Wells. A five minute stretch in the second gave Yale some space to pull away and they didn't look back. They are a talented team and execute at a high level."
Saints' goaltender
Lucy Morgan made 28 saves, while Dukaric made 20 for Yale.
The Bulldogs finished with a 34-21 advantage in shots on goal. St. Lawrence went 1-for-2 on the power play and killed off all three of Yale's man-up advantages.
With tonight's loss, the Saints fell to 11-16-2 overall and 5-8-2 in conference play, while Yale improved to 20-1-1 and 13-1-1.
St. Lawrence will head to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
