Olivia Middleton and
Jackie Malley each scored 14 points for the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team, but a big second quarter gave Vassar College the advantage on Friday evening in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Middleton also had five assists, five steals, and two rebounds, while Malley connected on four triples, while also grabbing five rebounds.
The Saints hit five of their first six shots and led 17-7 midway through the first quarter, but the Brewers closed with a nine-point run and after ten minutes St. Lawrence led by one. Vassar scored the first 12 points in the second quarter to jump out to an 11-point lead. They outscored the Saints 27-6 in the second quarter and led 43-23 at halftime. They would lead by as many as 26 in the second half and the final score read 75-57.
"Vassar is a good team and to beat good teams you need to play well," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "We started great, but then had a horrible stretch where we turned the ball over frequently and then could not control the glass and that fueled their run in the second quarter. Tough day all around."
Hannah Van Dyke went two for two from deep and finished with seven points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Vassar finished shooting 43-percent from the floor and three Brewers finished with double digits, led by Eliza Srinivasan's 16 points. After hitting 46.2-percent of their first quarter shots, the Saints finished the night shooting 33.9-percent.
Vassar grabbed seven more rebounds than St. Lawrence and had five fewer turnovers. The Brewers had 22 points off turnovers to the Saints' 14, and scored 14 more points in the paint.
The Saints fell to 7-7 overall and 4-5 in the league, while Vassar improved to 11-7 and 8-3 to remain third place in the conference standings.
St. Lawrence finishes their road trip on January 28
th facing Bard at 2 p.m., before they start a three-game home stand.
