Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Gosling Scores, Saints Fall to No. 9/10 Clarkson in Route 11 Rivalry

Julia Gosling tied the game late in the second period, but the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell 3-1 to the No. 9/10 Clarkson Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Saints jumped out to a quick start outshooting the Golden Knights early in the first frame, however Clarkson goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk came up big, stopping a shot from the slot by Rachel Bjorgan.

After a scoreless first period, St. Lawrence led 7-5 in shots on goal.

The Golden Knights struck first, as Brooke McQuigge capitalized on a rebound and a scramble, sneaking one past Lucy Morgan for the 1-0 lead just 1:22 into the second period.

Nearing the end of the second, Gosling found an answer for Clarkson's first goal. She skated from behind the goal line and up to the point and fired a rocket to beat Pasiechnyk on her blocker side.

Clarkson took the lead once again, as Anne Cherkowski found Nicole Gosling in the right side faceoff circle for the wrister and the 2-1 lead.

Gabrielle David scored on the power play for the Golden Knights to cap the scoring and the 3-1 final.

After the final Golden Knight's power play, the Saints pulled Morgan for the final minute and six seconds, but Clarkson had sealed the final win in the Route 11 rivalry series.

"This one certainly stings a bit," said head coach Chris Wells. "We had a great first period with some pace and chances. Unfortunately, we didn't convert on those early scoring opportunities. We had some energy in the second after tying it up on a great effort from Gos. Clarkson did a real good job in the third and then we ended up on penalty trouble. We have a week to rest up and get back at it now."

Morgan made 27 saves between the pipes for Scarlet and Brown, while Pasiechnyk finished with 15.

Clarkson finished with a 30-16 advantage in shots on goal and converted on 1-of-3 power play opportunities.

St. Lawrence fell to 11-15-2 on the season and 5-7-2 in conference play, while Clarkson improved to 20-6-2 and 9-4-1.

The Saints will hit the road again, as they travel to Yale and Brown next weekend, January 27-28.
