A big three-goal first period from the Crimson proved to be too much to overcome as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 5-0 to No. 9 Harvard University on Saturday night at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center in Cambridge, Mass.
The Scarlet and Brown saw their record even up at 11-11-0 and went to 6-4-0 in ECAC play, while the Crimson improved to 12-4-1, and 10-2-0 in league action.
An evenly played first half of the opening period turned at the 9:20 mark as Harvard opened the scoring. Sean Farrell came down the middle of the ice and scored with a great individual effort to put the Crimson up 1-0.
Six minutes later, Harvard would double their lead at 2-0 with a Joe Miller goal off assists from John Farinacci and Henry Thrun. A Saints' penalty late in the first put St. Lawrence on the penalty kill, which the Crimson capitalized on with a Farrell goal to extend the lead to 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Harvard would make it 4-0 just 42 seconds into the second with a Miller goal which brought
Grant Adams into the net for the Saints in relief of
Emil Zetterquist. Adams made ten saves on 11 shots for the Scarlet and Brown in the second frame.
The lone goal came fractions of a second after a Crimson power play when Ryan Healey's shot through traffic deflected past the junior netminder. Â
Aleksi Peltonen had the best chance of the middle period as he went in on a 2-on-1 and had his wrist shot stopped by Derek Mullahy.
St. Lawrence was able to create chances at an increased rate in the third period as they outshot Harvard 14-6.
Felikss Gavars, Peltonen, and the Saints' offense were able to get some dangerous shots onto Mullahy in the Harvard net but were ultimately shutout.
Zetterquist stopped 10 shots in his 20:42 of action, while Adams stopped 16 of the 17 that came his way in 39:15 of ice time. Mullahy stopped 23 shots in the Harvard goal.
The Saints went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the dangerous Crimson Power play went 1-for-6. Harvard held the 31-23 shots advantage.
The Skating Saints will be back in action next weekend when the team travels to Schenectady, N.Y. to take on the Union College Dutchmen at 7:00 p.m.
