Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Gosling Scores Early; Morgan, Saints Shutout Union on the Road

Julia Gosling scored early and Lucy Morgan recorded her fourth shutout of the season to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-0 win over Union on Friday evening at Messa Rink.

Gosling put the Scarlet and Brown on the board early, as she picked off the puck in the neutral zone and went one-on-one with Union goaltender Sophie Matsoukas for the 1-0 lead.

The Dutchwomen were granted two power play opportunities in the first, but the Saints penalty unit was up to the task killing off both advantages.

After one period, the Saints lead in shots on goal 9-4.

The second period brought a lot of back-and-forth play, but neither team found the back of the net, as the Scarlet and Brown continued to lead in shots on goal, 20-12.

Just a minute and 42 seconds into the third, Segedi added an insurance goal for the Saints, as she picked up the puck at center ice, skated into Union territory and fired a rocket over the left shoulder of Matsoukas to make it 2-0. Rachel Teslak and Taylor Lum assisted on the play.

It was Abby Hustler, who was next on the scoresheet for the Saints, as she picked up a cross-ice pass from Segedi, flew down the boards, put on the brakes and sent a backhanded shot past Matsoukas for the 3-0 lead at 10:05. Lum added her second assist of the night on the play.

Midway through the third period, Union's Riley Walsh was sent off for a five-minute major and a game misconduct for hitting from behind, but the Dutchwomen successfully killed off the five-minute advantage.

The Dutchwomen would play with an extra attacker for about a minute and a half but were unable to get one past Morgan.

"It was great to get one early this time around vs. Union," said head coach Chris Wells. "Once again we had some real good chances that didn't go until Segedi sent in a beauty to make it 2-0. Our third period was our best and it was nice to see Hustler slide in the insurance goal to make it 3-0."

Lucy Morgan recorded her fourth shutout of the season with 18 saves, while Matsoukas finished with 35 for the Dutchwomen. With her fourth shutout of the season, Morgan ties her season record from 2019-20 and moves into a tie for fifth place in career shutouts with Brittony Chartier '10 with 13.

St. Lawrence finished with a 38-18 advantage in shots on goal and lead 64-32 in overall shots.

With the win, the Saints improved to 11-12-1 overall and 5-5-1 in ECAC play, while Union fell to 10-12-1 and 3-8-1.

The Saints will remain in the Capital region as they take on RPI in Troy, N.Y. tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Houston Field House.
