Jackie Malley,
Olivia Middleton, and
Sierra Sanson reached double digits on Friday afternoon as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team posted a 75-60 loss at Ithaca College.
Middleton had two steals in the opening minutes and found Malley for the fastbreak layups and the Saints took an early 4-0 lead. The Bombers scored the next 16, but Sanson grabbed an offensive rebound and found
Cam Roberts for the jumper to stop the run and go into the second quarter down by 10.
The second quarter started with eight straight from the Saints to cut the lead to two, and the game of runs continued when Ithaca scored the next seven. After scoring just six points in the first quarter, the Saints outscored the Bombers by five in the second quarter, which included going nine for 10 from the free throw line and trailed 28-33 at half.
Middleton and Roberts hit back-to-back layups midway through the third to cut the lead to 4, but Ithaca immediately got the lead back up to nine. On an extended possession with two offensive rebounds,
Katie Chisholm hit a three and Sanson got to the paint on the next play and again made it a four-point game at 40-44. Ithaca closed the quarter on another run and led 52-42 with ten minutes to play.
Chisholm and
Hannah Van Dyke hit consecutive layups sandwiching a defensive stop to cut the Ithaca lead to seven with five minutes to play, but the Bombers scored 10-straight and at 73-56 had their biggest lead of the night and held on for the 75-60 win.
"We competed hard tonight against the best team in our league," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "We did a lot of good things but didn't shoot the ball well and had some very loud mistakes on defense that gave them points. Against some teams you make those mistakes and they don't make you pay, but Ithaca does. The lesson to be learned by our players is to not make the breakdown to start with, but if we play like that every game we'll be okay."
Malley, the first-year from Reading, Mass., led the Scarlet and Brown with 11 points and five rebounds. Middleton and Sanson each had 10 and combined for five steals, and Middleton had five assists.
Emily Dorn led Ithaca with 18 points. The Bombers shot 43-percent from the floor, including 57-percent in the final quarter.
The Saints, who shoot just under 70-percent from the free throw line, went 16 for 18 tonight.
The Saints fell to 6-4 and 2-3 in the Liberty League, while Ithaca improved to 11-2, and are undefeated in league play through six games. The Saints travel to Troy, N.Y. to face RPI on Saturday at 2 p.m.
