Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Skate to 2-2 With Harvard in Tuesday Matinee

Aly McLeod scored the opener and Kristina Bahl scored on the power play, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Harvard in a Tuesday morning matinee for Education Day at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

With their first tie of the season, the Saints moved to 10-12-1 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play, while Harvard moved to 4-10-3 and 3-7-3.

The Saints poured on the pressure early with near side chances from Anna Segedi and Hillary Sterling within the first couple minutes of play.

Aly McLeod broke through for the Scarlet and Brown, as Anna Segedi skated into the Harvard zone and found Abby Hustler, who sent a beautiful backhand pass to McLeod flying in on the left side of Harvard goaltender Alex Pellicci for the 1-0 lead.

Harvard had the better of the final two minutes of the first period, but Lucy Morgan stood her ground with back-to-back saves to keep the Crimson scoreless.

St. Lawrence outshot Harvard 29-12 in the first frame, including 19-7 in shots on goal.

At the 9:46 mark, Julia Gosling fed Bahl in the slot for a special team's tally and the 2-0 lead, marking Bahl's fourth power play goal of the season.

Just moments later, a lucky deflection put the Crimson back within one off the stick of Mia Biotti at 10:29.

With 1:01 remaining in the second period, Hannah Chorske picked off the puck in the neutral zone and sent a shot on Morgan. Her initial shot was saved by Morgan, but Chorske snuck the rebound behind Morgan's right skate to tie the game.

The Crimson rebounded and outshot the Saints 20-17 in the second, but the Scarlet and Brown held a slight 12-11 edge in shots on goal.

With both teams looking for the go-ahead goal, St. Lawrence would lead 70-50 in shots and in shots on goal 43-24, but the third period would remain scoreless and head to overtime.

Both Pellicci and Morgan made key saves in overtime to keep the game at 2-2, including a Morgan save on a back-handed shot from Kristin Della Rovere with 1:15 remaining.

Morgan finished off overtime with three more saves with help from blocks by Gosling and Hustler to finish off with a tie.

"It was a great atmosphere here today with all the kids in the building," said head coach Chris Wells. "We had plenty of chances to come away with the win, but Pellicci was sharp again against us."

"There is no doubt we are going to get there as we continue to improve in areas that win hockey games. Nothing comes easy in this league and we are getting great experience as we head into the final month of the season!"

Morgan finished with 26 saves, while Pellicci made 44.

St. Lawrence finished with a 46-28 advantage in shots on goal and the Scarlet and Brown went 1-for-2 on the power play.

The Saints will hit the road again this weekend as they travel to the Capital region to take on Union and RPI on January 13 and 14, respectively. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
