Potter Strikes Twice; Women's Soccer Erupts For Seven Goals In Win

After going into the half at 0-0, the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team erupted for seven goals in the second half to defeat SUNY Potsdam 7-0 in their second game of the North Country Classic on Sunday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 3-0 on the year, while the Bears fell to 1-2-0.

"I was really proud of oour group this weekend," said head coach Sinead McSharry "They came together and remained unified under tough conditions. Now we look to recover and go again next weekend."

The barrage led to many career firsts for the Saints as Meredith Donahue, Kaitlyn Barton, Hope Donoghue and Grace Mochnal each scored their first goals in Scarlet and Brown. Along with the goals, Madison King-Thurber, Lily Pleau, and Britney Burns each earned the first assists of their St. Lawrence careers.

The game, which was 0-0 for the first 54 minutes of action, was broken open at the 54:45 mark. King-Thurber, who scored her first goal earlier in the week, showed off her playmaking prowess as she darted down the pitch and drew the attention of the Bears' defenders before dishing the ball off to Donoghue, who beat Rylee Semco for the 1-0 lead.

Around four minutes later, Barton got on the scoresheet as she caused a turnover in the Potsdam zone and fired a long looping shot off the far post and in to give the Saints the 2-0 lead. Just two minutes and six seconds later, Mochnal was given a corner kick where she elected for a pass to Natalie Schock instead. Schock touched the ball back to Mochnal, who took a few steps towards goal and blasted the shot home for the 3-0 edge.

Next up for the Saints was Donahue, who took a Burns pass, spun to the inside, and ripped a left-footed strike into the top left corner of the frame to further extend the lead. Later in the half, Pleau carried the ball down the left side of the field until she was held up by a Potsdam defender. The first-year cut back and sent a perfect cross into the box where Tyler Potter was there to head the ball home giving St. Lawrence a 5-0 lead.

Burns earned her second assist of the game at the 76:10 mark of the game when she fed a pass to Emma Casey outside of the Potsdam defensive box. Casey took the pass and wired a perfect shot past Semco to keep the offensive outburst going.

The final goal of the game came in the closing minutes as Bella D'Anza pushed the ball up to Mochnal, who led Potter down the heart of the pitch with a lob pass. The senior touched the ball over the head of the goalkeeper and in for her second goal of the game.

The Scarlet and Brown's seven goals were the most since the 2018 season when the Saints scored eight in an 8-0 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the North Country Classic.

Keely Snode stopped two shots in 72:18 of action before Darcie McDonough capped off the combined shutout playing the final 17:42. Semco finished with nine saves in the game for the Bears.

St. Lawrence held a 25-3 shots advantage in shots and a 16-2 edge in shots on goal over the Bears. The Saints also had seven corner kicks to Potsdam's one.

The Saints will head back to the road next weekend as they travel to Misericordia University next weekend to take on Nazareth College and Farmingdale State. St. Lawrence will line up against the Golden Flyers on Saturday, September 10th at 3:30 p.m. then will take on the Rams on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
