Jenny L'Hommedieu scored the lone goal and the St. Lawrence field hockey team got their first win of the season on Sunday in Oneonta, N.Y.
After a scoreless first quarter in which St. Lawrence out-shot Oneonta 6-2, it looked like the teams would be heading into halftime scoreless. With 30 seconds to go the Saints earned a penalty corner and
Maggie Green fired it into the mixer. L'Hommedieu bounced a shot off of the keeper, and was able to poke her own rebound into the back of the cage.
The next best chance at scoring came with under two minutes to play in the game.
Anna Coyne got a couple shots off and Oneonta goalkeeper Jennifer Tumino came up with a pair of saves, but an infraction gave the Saints a penalty stroke. Green stepped to the line looking to double the lead, and fired a shot low and to the left, but Tumino again was able to keep it out.
The Red Dragons barreled down the field with seconds on the clock desperate for an equalizer, but
Molly Lake was able to clear the ball away from danger and the final horn sounded.
Lucy Adiutori got her first clean sheet of the season and came up with four saves. Coyne had three shots on goal, and L'Hommedieu, Green, and first-year
Caroline Hamilton each had two.
"We came out strong in the first half," said head coach
Fran Grembowicz. "We connected well all over the field. We had a great push to net, but we need to work on finishing. It was awesome to see the first goal of the season go in net. It's exciting to see the team starting to gel."
Both St. Lawrence and Oneonta are 1-1 on the season. Next weekend the Saints travel to Geneva, N.Y., where they'll face Lebanon Valley on Saturday and Manhattanville on Sunday.
