Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Schock's Goal Gives Women's Soccer 1-0 Win Over Colby-Sawyer

Sophomore Natalie Schock got behind the Chargers' defense in the second half and scored the game's only goal to send the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College in the North Country Classic on Saturday at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 2-0-0 with the win, while the Chargers fell to 0-1-1.

The Saints held heavy possession throughout their first home contest holding a 10-5 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes of play. However, St. Lawrence was unable to break the 0-0 tie.

With just under 25 minutes left to go in the opening half, Grace Bridge struck a perfect pass from her defender position to Meredith Donahue. The first-year sidestepped a defender and put a shot on goal but Alexis Lebreton was up to the task.

Later in the half, with 9:44 remaining, Kaitlyn Barton nearly broke the scoring drought when she found herself one-on-one with the Chargers' keeper. Barton's right-footed strike sailed over the cross bar to keep the game scoreless.

Early in the second frame, the Saints finally saw the ball hit the netting. Madison King-Thurber, fresh off her first career goal in the last game, laced a perfect through ball to Hope Donoghue springing her for a breakaway. The forward lobbed the ball over the head of the goalkeeper and in, but the play was blown dead for an offside call keeping the game even.

The Scarlet and Brown kept pushing the pace and finally broke through with 27:05 left in the game. Donoghue started the scoring play with a touch pass to Casey in the middle of the pitch, then a quick left-footed pass sprung Schock down the left side. The sophomore outraced a defender and fired a shot home to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.

Keely Snode and the stout Saints' defense kept Colby-Sawyer at bay the rest of the contest allowing just one shot through as the team sealed the win.

Snode finished with five saves in her first clean sheet of the year, while Lebreton stopped nine shots in the opposing goal.

St. Lawrence outshot Colby-Sawyer 18-8 and had the 10-5 edge in shots on goal. The Saints also dominated with eight corner kicks to one.

The Scarlet and Brown will have a quick turnaround as they will host SUNY Potsdam at Sandy MacAllaster Field in their second game of the North Country Classic tomorrow at noon.
