Men's Soccer Battles To 2-2 Tie In Road Matchup With Buffalo State

Marvin Sibanda and Max Mogul each scored second half goals, but the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw at Buffalo State's Coyer Field on Saturday night.

The Scarlet and Brown went to 1-0-1 on the season, while Buffalo State also went to 1-0-1.

"We were very proud of the boys tonight with the effort they gave," said Mike Toshack "We were able to score twice, but we were very unfortunate with the four posts we hit tonight. However, the team refuses to lose and fights for every ball which puts us in good standing as we move forward and progress as a team. Buffalo State played an excellent game as well."

The first half came and went at 0-0 as both teams struggled to beat the game's goalkeepers. St. Lawrence nearly struck twice in the opening 45 minutes as the team hit two posts, one of which came in the opening moments from Miles Levy.

The Saints had the narrow shots lead after the first half, but it was the Bengals that would strike first. Buffalo State's Gio Donofrio took a through ball from Manu Prieto and beat George Charalambous to take the 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later, the Scarlet and Brown would tie the game off a penalty kick. A St. Lawrence forward was attempting to turn on a defender but was hauled down in the box giving the team a penalty kick. The team sent the sure-footed Sibanda to the line, who buried the ball on the right side of the net for the equalizer.

The Saints would double their lead just under five minutes later to claim their first lead of the game. Max Mogul started the play by back pressuring the Bengals and forced a turnover to Antonio Rogliano, who charged up the pitch. Rogliano drew Shae Wirt out of the net a dished an unselfish pass to Mogul, who scored to give St. Lawrence the 2-1 lead.

The lead was not long lived as the Bengals would respond with an equalizer of their own as Prieto took a cross and fired the ball home to make the game 2-2.

The tie was nearly broken in the closing minutes as Kyle Graber found himself with room to the side of Wirt. His hard-hit ball was barely tipped wide by the arm of the keeper to preserve the 2-2 score.

Charalambous finished with four saves in net for St. Lawrence, while Wirt stopped three in the home net.

Buffalo State had the narrow 12-10 advantage in shots, while the Saints had the 9-6 edge in shots. The Bengals had significantly more corner kicks at an 8-2 margin.

The Scarlet and Brown will head back to Canton to host SUNY Canton on Wednesday, September 7th at Sandy MacAllaster.
