Saints Shutout by Endicott in Season Opener

Ryan Watson and Victor Gamberoni each recorded double-digit tackles, but the St. Lawrence University football team was shutout by Endicott, 27-0, in its season opener on Saturday, September 3 at Leckonby Stadium.

Watson finished with 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for the loss for 17 yards and one forced fumble, while Gamberoni tallied 10 tackles and Brian Casazza finished with nine. Sophomore quarterback Daniel Lawther went 11-for-22 and passed for 130 yards in his first game out this season, while Peyton Schmitt rushed for 19 yards and caught five passes for 33 yards, while Robert Coll caught the longest pass of the day for 41 yards.

The Gulls were first to the board, as Ryan Smith converted on a 41-yard field goal to give Endicott a 3-0 lead at the 10:28 mark of the first quarter.

After scoring the lone three points of the first, Endicott's Anthony Caggianelli made a 12-yard run for the Gulls first touchdown of the day, capping a 48-yard run. Smith notched the extra point, increasing Endicott's lead to 10-0.

Clayton Marengi made another 12-yard run and Smith converted on the kick once again, extending the Gulls lead to 17-0 at 9:26.

The Saints struggled to generate any offense, but one of their best first downs of the day came at the 7:41 of the second quarter, as Lawther pulled off the quarterback sneak for the first down at the 48-yard line. Coll's 41-yard catch with 4:26 to play in the second was another strong down for the Scarlet and Brown.

After the break and just before the close of the third quarter, Caggianelli tallied his second touchdown of the day at 1:29. Smith finished off the point scoring with a 31-yard field goal with 8:32 to play in the fourth.

Clayton Marengi threw for 135 yards going 16-for-21 and finished with 47 rushing yards, while Caggianelli rushed for 80 yards on 23 attempts and Shane Aylward made six catches for 48 yards. Matthew Licciardi recorded a team-best eight tackles and one quarterback hurry, while Zachariah Twardosky and Michael Canney each finished with one sack.

Endicott held a 22-5 advantage in first downs and finished with a 316-148 lead in total offensive yards. The Gulls controlled the possession time 35:11 to the Saints 24:46.

Endicott moved to 1-0 on the season, while St. Lawrence fell to 0-1.
