Sophomore quarterback
Daniel Lawther was 11-for-17 passing with three touchdowns and 171 passing yards to lead the St. Lawrence University football team to a 30-19 win over Norwich on the 20th anniversary of the Hoffman Cup game on Saturday afternoon in Northfield, Vt.
With three touchdowns on the day, Lawther was named the Most Valuable Player for the St. Lawrence squad.
Peyton Schmitt led the Saints' ground game with 121 yards on 12 attempts, while
Cameron Giunta rushed for 71 yards.
Joseph Ott finished with three receptions and a team-best 84 yards and one touchdown, while
TJ Cornacchia finished with five receptions for 69 yards and two touchdowns.
Bennett Cheer led the Saints' defense with five tackles, while
Ryan Watson and
Owen O'Brien each tallied four.
Reece Gillette recorded one tackle for the loss for eight yards. Â
Norwich was the first to the scoreboard, as Mitchell Theal's pass to Trevor Chase was complete for 36 yards and the Cadet's first touchdown of the game. Zach Buchy's kick was good, giving Norwich a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
Just about two minutes later, the Scarlet and Brown would add on their first touchdown, as Lawther connected with Ott for a 63-yard touchdown.
Clayton Fogler tacked on the extra point for a tie game with 10:44 to play in the first.
The Cadet's would take their second lead of the game on a punt from Jalloh Sulaiman to increase Norwich's lead to 13-7. At the 9:54 mark, Norwich would look for the two-point conversion, but Justin Bryant's pass was intercepted and returned 97 yards by Dan George for the defensive two points and giving the Saints the 14-13 lead.
Off a 74-yard drive, Lawther would throw his second touchdown pass of the day, this time connecting with Cornacchia for a 34-yard touchdown with 1:42 remaining in the second quarter for the 23-13 lead at halftime.
Victor Gamberoni came up with a big stop with just under 30 seconds remaining in the third, as he intercepted Theal's pass on a 3rd and goal for the Cadets.
At the start of the third, neither team could get much going on offense. The Cadet's broke the stalemate, as Theal connected with Chase for the second time, for a 16-yard touchdown, bringing Norwich back within four points with 3:37 to play in the third quarter.
The Saints held a short-field advantage off a short punt from the Cadets and with a 10-play, 41-yard drive, Lawther found Cornacchia for a two-yard touchdown. Fogler's kick was good for the 30-19 lead with 7:33 to play.
Theal finished with 207 passing yards on 17-of-30 attempts and two touchdowns for the Cadets, while Chase caught 12 passes for 163 yards and Bryant rushed for 49 yards on eight attempts. Matthew Christe recorded a team-best six tackles.
St. Lawrence held a 23-14 advantage in first downs, rushed for 183 yards to Norwich's 92, held a 34:45-24:51 edge in time of possession and went 7-for-10 on third-down efficiencies.
The Saints improved to 1-1 on the season, while Norwich fell to 0-2.
St. Lawrence will return to Leckonby Stadium, where they will host Morrisville State for the Rally for Talley game, under the lights on Friday, September 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
