Game Recap: Football |

Morrisville Sneaks by Saints, 17-15

Sophomore quarterback Daniel Lawther was 17-for-22 passing for 175 and first-year Clayton Fogler kicked a 24-yard field goal, but the St. Lawrence University football team fell to Morrisville 17-15 under the lights at Leckonby Stadium on Friday night.

Lawther also picked up one rushing touchdown, while Peyton Schmitt rushed for 78 yards on 19 attempts for one touchdown and TJ Cornacchia and Robert Coll finished with four receptions apiece for 51 and 50 yards, respectively. Evan Pastino led the Saints' defense with 11 tackles, while Reece Gillette finished with 10 and one pass breakup. Brian Casazza finished with five tackles and one tackle for the loss of three yards.

After a scoreless first quarter of play, Schmitt capped a 12-play, 84-yard run to put the Scarlet and Brown on the board first with a three-yard run and a 6-0 lead with 6:21 to play in the second.

With just under a minute to play, Mustangs' quarterback Steven Frerichs scored his first touchdown of the night with a 1-yard run and Owen Cole added the extra point to put Morrisville up 7-6.

As time expired, Fogler capitalized on a 24-yard field goal to putting the Saints up 9-7 at the break.

Morrisville opened the third quarter with a field goal off their own off a 20-yard kick from Cole to give the Mustangs a 10-9 advantage. Morrisville would hold onto its one-point lead for the remainder of the third.

Frerichs scored his second touchdown, another one-yard run with 8:32 to play in the fourth for the 17-9 lead.

With the Saints looking for the comeback, Lawther pulled off the quarterback sneak just enough for the two-yard run and the touchdown to bring the Scarlet and Brown within two. Unfortunately, the Saints were unable to pick up the two-point conversion to tie the game, giving Morrisville the 17-15 win as time expired.

Frerichs was 14-for-20 passing for 164 yards and also led Morrisville's ground game with 85 yards on 19 attempts and two touchdowns. Ernesto Mitchell led the Mustangs defense with a team-best 16 tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack, while Joe Miller-Labar finished with nine tackles.

Both teams recorded 19 first downs, while Morrisville held a slight ground-game advantage finishing with 139 yards to the Saints' 115. The Mustangs also finished with 303 offensive yards to St. Lawrence's 290.

Morrisville improved to 3-0 on the season, while St. Lawrence fell to 1-2.

Prior to today's game, the Saints honored former head coach and National Football Hall of Fame honoree, Andy Talley for his contributions to St. Lawrence football and the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation. The Saints also welcomed back members of the 1982 Hall of Fame football team, who were celebrating the 40th anniversary of their undefeated season.

St. Lawrence will travel to Castleton to face the Spartans, next Saturday, September 24 at 12 p.m.
