Peyton Schmitt and
Daniel Lawther picked up two touchdowns apiece and
Clayton Fogler tallied two field goals, as the St. Lawrence University football team cruised to a 34-6 win over Castleton on Saturday afternoon in Castleton, Vt.
Lawther threw 20-for-26 for 214 yards and picked up his two touchdowns on the run, finishing with 117 rushing yards, while Schmitt rushed for 72 yards on 18 attempts.
Daniel Greene picked up 80 yards on five receptions, while
TJ Cornacchia recorded 54 yards on nine receptions.
Brian Casazza led the Saints' defense with seven tackles, while
Bennett Cheer and
Quinn Bergeron both recorded six each. Cheer Bergeron and
Thomas Our both finished with 1.5 tackles for a loss, while Cheer and Our each recorded a sack.
The Saints hit the scoreboard first, as Schmitt rushed for three yards, and Fogler's kick was good for the extra point, giving the Scarlet and Brown the early 7-0 lead.
Castleton responded with a touchdown of their own, as Jackson Brand ran for six yards to bring the Spartans within one.
Just about a minute later, Lawther ran a season-high 71 yards and Fogler's second kick was good to put the Saints up 14-6 and close the first quarter.
Most of the second quarter remained scoreless, before Schmitt would tally his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard run with eight seconds remaining. With the extra-point, St. Lawrence headed to the break with a 21-6 lead.
The Spartans made quick work to start the third quarter, but
Daniel George came up with a big interception at St. Lawrence's four-yard line to turn the ball over and put the Saints back into control.
On an 83-yard play, Lawther connected with Greene for 48 yards and Cornacchia for seven, before Lawther rushed for one to cap the play and pick up the touchdown. Fogler converted on the extra point once again, and the Saints took a 28-6 lead with 3:34 to play in the third.
Fogler picked up the 20-yard field goal with 12:34 to play increasing the Saints lead to 31-6.
St. Lawrence regained control quickly. With Castleton on the second down with eight yards to go,
Bennett Cheer forced a fumble, which was recovered by
Liam Perkins for the turnover.
Fogler capped the scoring with a second field goal, this time for 21 yards.
Castleton's Evan Smith threw 13-for-22 for 153 yards, while Saijon McIntosh finished with two receptions for 33 yards. Quinten Asiedu recorded a team-best seven tackles.
The Saints finished with a 20-17 edge in first downs and finished 215 rushing yards to Castleton's 97. They also led in total offensive yards 429-263 and possession time 33:40-26:20 and converted on eight of 13 third-down conversions.
The Saints improved to 2-2 on the season, while Castleton fell to 1-3.
St. Lawrence is off next week and will return to action when they host Union in their Liberty League opener on Saturday, October 8 on Laurentian Weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
