Saints Fall to Union on Laurentian Weekend

Saints' quarterback Daniel Lawther connected with TJ Cornacchia to tie the game with 59 seconds remaining in the first quarter, but the Union Dutchmen remained in control the rest of the game to defeat the St. Lawrence University football team 44-7 on Saturday afternoon during Laurentian Weekend.

Lawther finished 11-for-25 for 144 yards and one touchdown, while Peyton Schmitt ran for 43 yards on 13 attempts and Cameron Giunta finished with 20 yards on seven attempts. Both Cornacchia and Cole Salyards finished with three catches, finishing with 47 and 57, respectively. Both Joseph Ott and Daniel Greene made two catches.

Victor Gamberoni led the Saints' defense with 11 tackles, one interception and one pass breakup, while Daniel George finished with eight tackles and Matthew Dahill finished with one tackle for the loss of five yards.

The Dutchmen opened scoring at the 6:39 mark of the first quarter as Ike Irabor made a nine-yard run and Andrew Lau converted on the kick for the 7-0 lead.

The Saints rebounded and tied the game as Lawther and Cornacchia connected on a nine-yard pass on a 63-yard drive. Clayton Fogler connected on the kick for the tie game.

Early in the second quarter, Michael Fiore would score his first of four touchdowns on the afternoon. He recorded the first two in the second quarter and both of Lau's kicks were good to give the Dutchmen a 21-7 lead at halftime.

The Dutchmen were stopped on an early play as Gamberoni intercepted a pass from Donovan Pacatte for a turnover on the Saints' four-yard line.

Lau added three points for Union with a field goal to open the third quarter and Jonathan Anderson made a 10-yard run with 1:43 to play to increase Union's lead to 31-7.

The Scarlet and Brown defensive unit put up two big stops with virtually no gain to keep the Dutchmen off the board until late in the quarter.

Fiore talled two more touchdowns in the fourth frame, en route to the win.

Pacatte passed 14-for-16 for 206 yards, while Fiore led the Dutchmen's ground game with 126 yards on 26 attempts. Andre Ross finished with four catches for 89 yards. Spencer Goldstein recorded a team-best 10 tackles, while Jaden Duncan recorded 1.5 tackles for the loss of 11 yards. Duncan and Michael Rodriguez finished with 1.5 sacks each.
