Max Mogul scored in the first half, and
Ryan Campbell scored his first career goal to tie the game late, as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with RPI on Wednesday night at ECAV Stadium.
St. Lawrence moved to 5-1-3 on the year and 1-0-1 in Liberty League play, while the Engineers went to 3-3-3 and 1-0-1 in conference action.
"Once again, the team fought very hard to come back and eanr a point on the road against a very good team." said head coach
Mike Toshack "We're looking forward to playing the next two games at Sandy MacAllaster Field! We now focus on Ithaca this Saturday!"
The game got off to a hot start as both teams looked to get on the board first.
Marvin Sibanda got the first great chance of the game as the senior had a free kick five minutes into the contest. The midfielder blasted a ball towards the frame but had his shot tipped aside by Luke Brezak.
Moments later, it was RPI, who would jump on the scoreboard first, off a corner kick scramble. The kick fell into the Saints' box and ping-ponged around the feet and heads of all the players looking for a touch. Paul Silvia eventually gained control and shoveled a pass to Kyle Osborne, who knocked in the ball to take the 1-0 lead.
The Scarlet and Brown wasted no time responding as they equalized the game 22 seconds later. Off the reset, a
Ben Woelfinger ball got the play into the Engineer's defensive end, where
Miles Levy would take control. The senior found classmate
Antonio Rogliano streaking down the right side of the field, and the midfielder beat his defender to the box. Rogliano centered a pass back to Mogul, who ripped the ball past the outstretched arms of Brezak to tie the game at 1-1.
Later in the half, the Saints nearly took a lead of their own. Reigning league Offensive Performer of the Week
Sam Pijpers found himself with space to the right of the RPI keeper and wired a shot just over the crossbar, keeping the game tied going into the second.
With just over 26 minutes left to go in the contest, Osborne struck once again to give the Engineers a one-goal lead. After an offensive zone turnover, an RPI defender lobbed a long ball ahead to Osborne, who squirted free and place a shot over Woelfinger to take the 2-1 lead.
The game proceeded to slow to a crawl as time started to be wasted in the contest. The Scarlet and Brown would prevail as they knotted up the contest with five minutes left to go. Levy, like the first goal, once again took control of the ball in the middle of the pitch and made a perfect pass to his right. Graber received the ball, outraced the RPI back line, and slid a pass over to Campbell, who beat Brezak to tie the game at 2-2. The eventual game-tying goal was Campbell's first as a Saint.
Woelfinger made four saves in the Saints' goal throughout the game, while his counterpart Brezak also stopped four.
RPI held the slight 11-9 advantage in shots, while both teams put six shots on goal. The Engineers had eight corner kicks to St. Lawrence's two.
The Scarlet and Brown, who have played 13 of their last 14 matches on the road dating back to last season, will return to the friendly confines of Sandy MacAllaster Field where they will play six of their final eight games. On Saturday, October 1st, the Saints will line up against Ithaca College in a 2:00 p.m. tilt.
