The only goal of the day came off the boot of an Ithaca defender for an own goal as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team defeated Ithaca 1-0 on Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 6-1-3 on the year and 2-0-1 in Liberty League play with the win, while the Bombers fell to 1-5-4 and 0-1-2 in league play.
"This team is so full of fight, which combined with their quality makes them very hard to beat!" said head coach
Mike Toshack "With eight of our ten games being on the road, it was nice to get back to Sandy MacAllaster Field. The players put in a difficult shift after the mid-week trip to RPI and I can't ask for anything more from them! We now turn our attention to playing a very good, nationally-ranked Clarkson side on Wednesday."
In a well-played game, shots were hard to come by, but
Miles Levy had a great first attempt on goal in the first half. The captain was fed a pass from
Marvin Sibanda in the middle of the Ithaca zone and took the pass in and put a blistering shot on goal that was turned aside by Ian Whitfield.
The Bombers would strike right back getting a good attempt moments later. On the counter attack, Ithaca's Conor Baird was streaking down the left side of the field and after receiving a pass, fired a long shot on the frame that was stopped by
Ben Woelfinger. Later in the half, Ithaca had another great look when Brendan Lebitsch rifled a shot that was tipped aside my Woelfinger. The rebound came to Drew Warren, who put a shot on goal that was blocked by
Sam Peacock.
Before there was another shot on goal in the second frame, the Saints got on the board with a goal at 71:11. Sibanda started the play getting the ball over to
Kyle Graber then darting towards the net. Graber dished off to
Shane Hauck, who sent a centering pass in trying to find Sibanda and
Antonio Rogliano. The ball was instead played by an Ithaca defender, who inadvertently tipped the ball past Whitfield to put the Scarlet and Brown up 1-0.
With a goal in the bag, St. Lawrence ratcheted up the pressure generating the next four shots with two of the shots sailing wide and two shots being blocked aside.
In the closing 11 minutes, Ithaca was able to get three shots off as they searched for an equalizer. Two of their bids were blocked away and they had a header sail wide as Woelfinger and the Saints' defense earned the clean sheet.
Woelfinger earned his fourth shutout of the season in the game stopping all five shots he faced. Bombers' goalkeeper, Whitfield stopped one shot in the loss.
St. Lawrence and Ithaca were even at 12 shots a piece, while the Bombers held the 5-2 edge.
The Scarlet and Brown will return home this Wednesday, October 5 as they welcome Clarkson University to the friendly confines of Sandy MacAllaster Field for a 4:00 p.m. match.
