Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Ties No. 21 Clarkson In Route 11 Derby

After playing nearly 70 minutes down 1-0, Ryan Campbell delivered an equalizer late in the second half to help send the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against No. 21 Clarkson University on Wednesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Saints moved to 6-1-4 overall with the draw and remain undefeated in Liberty league play at 2-0-2. The Knight went to 7-1-2 and 1-1-2 in conference action.

"It was another typical St. Lawrence, Clarkson battle. Whether it's on the ice, court, or on the grass, it always a fantastic game" said head coach Mike Toshack "For people that were neutral, or fans of the game, it was an enjoyable one to watch as the two teams went at each other. It easy to see why they are a ranked team, and they're led by one of the best young coaches in the country in Carter Lincoln. I gotta give credit to our team, we're never dead, we're never beaten, and they showed that today. They took the game and started to create the chances for us to win it and we had three really good chances after our goal. It's tough, but what I'm most impressed with is the next guy up mentality of this team. We were missing four players that played alot of minutes last year, and it hasn't diminished the competitiveness of this group."

In a hotly contested soccer match, it was Clarkson, who jumped on the scoreboard early with a goal less than six minutes into the game. Colin Burnell made a run down the right side of the field and sent a pass into the box that was put home by a sliding Zach Shufelt.

Clarkson took the lead and fell back into the defensive zone to prevent Saints' shots from getting to the woodwork. The best chance of the half for the Scarlet and Brown came from Marvin Sibanda at 26:12, who pounced on a loose ball from his midfield spot, climbed all the way into a scoring area, but sailed his shot high of Carter Kladstrup.

The Saints, who dominated possession for most of the contest continued to hunt for an equalizer in the second half. Both Miles Levy and Kyle Graber had great looks on the frame but just barely missed their marks.

St. Lawrence finally found their goal as a throw-in play from Sibanda and Graber led to the senior rifling a perfect left-footed cross to the far post where Campbell headed the ball home to tie the game at 1-1 with 14:29 left in the game.

Clarkson came out of their defensive structure to look for a goal and generated four shots, which sailed wide, were blocked and stopped by Ben Woelfinger in net.
With under two minutes left in the game, a Golden Knight defender played a ball with his hand in their defensive box leading to a penalty kick. Sibanda took the kick for the Saints and pushed the shot to the right.

In the final minute of action Clarkson's Nolan Grady was able to get a shot off that was saved by Woelfinger. The senior made a heads-up play bombing the ball forward to Graber, who had a wide-open lane to the goal. The forward sidestepped a defender and sent a pass to Sam Peacock, who with seven ticks left on the clock had his shot turned away by Kladstrup to preserve the tie.

Woelfinger finished with four saves in the St. Lawrence net, while Kladstrup stopped three for Clarkson.

The Scarlet and Brown generated more shots at a 14-11 clip but trailed 5-4 in shots on goal. The Knights had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

St. Lawrence will be back in action this weekend as the team travels to RIT on Saturday, October 8th for a 2:00 conference match.
