King-Thurber Scores In 1-0 Win Over Union; Snode Earns Fifth Clean Sheet

Jenna Durkin sent a long first half corner kick into the box that Madison King-Thurber put into the back of the net to give the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Union College on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Scarlet and Brown remain undefeated on the season at 5-0-2 and 1-0-1 in the Liberty League. The Dutchwomen, who were on their longest season-opening scoreless streak in program history, fell to 7-1-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in conference play.

"I'm happy with how we played overall," said head coach Sinead McSharry "We had a lot of good chances and some stellar defending too. Another good wekk ahead to prepare for another good team."

The Saints came out of the starting blocks firing to the tune of an 8-1 advantage in shots in the opening ten minutes of play. Among the attempts was Kaitlyn Barton, who tested Abby Mitty with two dangerous shots on the frame.

The Dutchwomen would counterattack earning the next five shots in the contest. In the flurry, Grace Bridge made a huge play as a Union corner kick came directly to Meghan Piser. Piser put the ball away from Snode in net but was stopped by the foot of Bridge, who saved a potential goal to keep the game at 0-0.

Later in the half, the Scarlet and Brown would capitalize on a corner kick to take the lead. At the 34:42 mark, the Saints earned a corner that was taken by Durkin. The defender sent a perfect ball into the box which deflected off a defender in front. The ball bounced up to King-Thurber, who ushered the ball past Mitty to claim the 1-0 lead.

Snode was back at it in the second half keeping Union off the board. Ten minutes into the half, Sam Friedman and Addie Zimmerman had back-to-back looks at the St. Lawrence woodwork but were stymied by the junior goalkeeper.

Later in the period, Lilly Stone subbed into the game and moments later made an immediate impact as she connected with Grace Mochnal in the box, who touched ball over to a wide-open Emma Reynolds. The junior midfielder put a hard shot on goal but was turned aside.

With less than 20 minutes left in the game, Union had another great chance when a mad scramble in front of the Saints' goal fell to the foot of Cassidy Careccia. Careccia's effort was stopped by the outstretched foot of Snode to hold the lead. Off the ensuing corner, Katherine O'Brien put a shot on goal but came away empty for the Dutchwomen.

Snode, who entered the weekend tied for 13th in the nation with four shutouts, earned her fifth clean sheet of the season stopping all eight shots that came her way. The junior goalkeeper extended her shutout streak to 545:47 in the win.

Mitty, who entered the game without a goal against, stopped three of four shots in her 45 minutes of work, while Rachel Berliner stopped three shots of her own in the second half for Union.

The Scarlet and Brown held the 20-17 edge in shots but were outshot 9-7 in shots on goal. The Dutchwomen had the 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

St. Lawrence will be back in action next weekend when the team travels to Ithaca College on Saturday, October 1st to take on the Bombers in a 3:00 p.m. tilt.
