Kaitlyn Barton led the Saints with two shots on goal, but the St. Lawrence women's soccer team saw their unbeaten record broken with a 1-0 loss to Ithaca College on Saturday at Carp Wood Field.
The Saints fell to 5-1-2 on the year and 1-1-1 in Liberty League play with the loss, while the Bombers improved to 6-2-2 overall and 2-1-0 in league action.
"I'm proud of this group and the resilience they showed today," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "It was a tough game and a physical one at that. We're onto the next one on Tuesday against Plattsburgh."
With both team's playing a strong defensive game, quality chances were hard to come by. The first good look of the game came from
Tyler Potter, who was played a through ball and got a shot off but was turned away by an aggressive play from Ithaca's Claire Reader.
The Bombers answered later in the half with a dangerous chance as Kaelyn Fernandez found herself with space in front of
Keely Snode and the Saints' net. The first-year's shot sailed wide to keep the game even.
The Scarlet and Brown threatened again in the 35th-minute as Barton found herself alone with Reader. Barton's bid was stopped then she put her own rebound back on goal, but was stymied to keep the game even.
The deciding moment came in the second half as Megan Buttinger put the bombers up 1-0 at the 68:43 mark. Buttinger received a ball in the middle of the pitch and was able to sidestep a Saints' defender. The move freed up the forward, who put a right-footed shot past the outstretched arms of Snode to take the lead. Â Â
St. Lawrence had one last chance late as the ball was on
Emma Reynolds foot with under two minutes left, but the junior's bid was stopped by Reader to help secure the win.
Snode stopped six of the seven shots she faced in the loss, while Reader stopped all five Saints' shots.
The Bombers had a significant 16-5 edge in shots, but had just a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Ithaca had four corner kicks to St. Lawrence's one.
The Scarlet and Brown will head home to play two home games next week before their gauntlet stretch of four of their last five on the road. On Wednesday, the Saints will line up for a non-conference match against SUNY Plattsburgh at 4:00 p.m., then on Saturday, the team will celebrate Laurentian Weekend with a game against RIT at 3:00 p.m.
