Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 To Plattsburgh

The Saints held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, but a second half goal by Kirsten Villemaire sent the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-0 loss to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Scarlet and Brown fell to 5-2-2 on the year, while the Cardinals improved to 6-4-1.

"We need to capitalize on our chances moving forward," said head coach Sinead McSharry "We had some good moments, but in front of the goal we need to be hungrier."

St. Lawrence dominated possession early in the contest as they outshot Plattsburgh 10-3 in the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Saints nearly broke the 0-0 tie with just over ten minutes left in the first half. A foul at midfield gave Mia Cence a free kick which connected with a Cardinals' defender. The bad touch ended up on the foot of Emma Reynolds, who was one-on-one with Lauren Haley. Reynolds' shot barely sailed over the cross bar to keep the game tied.

In the second half, another Cence free kick nearly ended up in the Plattsburgh goal. With a hair under 30 minutes left, the defender's kick found a Saints forward in the box. The ball was touched over to Meredith Donahue, whose one-on-one attempt also sailed wide.

Less than a minute later, the Cardinals counter attacked to take the lead. Nora Fitzgerald found herself with space through the middle of the field and placed a through-ball to Kirsten Villemaire, who snuck the ball past Keely Snode giving them the 1-0 lead.

Plattsburgh turned up the pressure generating nine shots the rest of the way, keeping the ball away from the Saints. At the 77:31 mark, Kaitlyn Barton was able to get a shot on the Cardinals' woodwork but was turned aside as the game went to a 1-0 final.

Snode finished the game with three saves, while Haley stopped nine in the win.

St. Lawrence had the 15-13 advantage in shots and the 9-4 edge in shots on goal and paced Plattsburgh with seven corner kicks to their four.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back home on Saturday, as the Saints celebrate 2022 Laurentian Weekend with a 3:00 p.m. match against RIT at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
