Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pijpers' Last-Minute Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Over Union 1-0

Sam Pijpers scored his sixth goal of the season in the final minute of the game to give the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team a 1-0 over Union College on Saturday afternoon at College Park Field in Schenectady, N.Y.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 5-1-2 on the season and earned their first conference win of the season in the effort. Union fell to 2-3-1 with the loss and are 0-1-0 in conference action.

"To have a successful season you must be resilient and be able to fight through all kinds of different challenges, especially on the road!" said head coach Mike Toshack "This team has that quality and it showed today snatching a win against a very well-coached team, who made it difficult to play against. Going back to last season, 12 of our last 13 games have been on the road and we've done well to come away with an 8-2-2 record, so this team is battle-tested. We now turn our attention to the last game of our road stretch against RPI."

Shots were hard to come by for the Saints, who had just one shot on goal in the opening 45. That shot came at the 26:44 mark of the first half when a low shot to the right from Marvin Sibanda was stopped in net by Union's Sean Speck.

On the other end, Ben Woelfinger stood tall in net stopping three Dutchmen attempts to keep the score tied at 0-0 going into the second half.

Shots continued to be at a premium in the second 45 as Luca Richo registered the only bid in the opening 40 minutes of the second half, which was turned aside by Woelfinger.

The Dutchmen applied good pressure as the clock struck five minutes remaining as Evan Farr and Ethan Layton were able to get high shots off but once again came up empty as they were unable to solve Woelfinger.

In the waning minutes of the game, Sibanda received a pass behind the midfield line from the Saints' senior goalkeeper and ran a set play with Kyle Graber and Shane Hauck streaking down the right side. The senior played a beautiful ball into Graber, who turned inside and found Pijpers all alone at the top of the Union box. The junior blasted a low shot to the left side of the frame with 53 ticks left on the clock to give the Scarlet and Brown the decisive 1-0 edge.

Woelfinger earned his third clean sheet of the season with the win stopping six shots in the Saints' frame. Union's Speck stopped one shot in the loss.

The Dutchmen held a 12-7 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Union also led the way with six corners to St. Lawrence's five.

The Scarlet and Brown will play their last game of their road stretch this coming Wednesday when the Saints travel to Troy, N.Y. to take on RPI in a 7:00 p.m. match under the lights at ECAV Stadium.
