Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Battle Friars to Overtime, Fall to Providence in Season Opener

Taylor Lum tied the game with 3:12 remaining in the third period to send the game to overtime, but Reichen Kirchmair tallied the game winner with 1:32 left in overtime, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell to Providence College, 3-2, in the 2022-23 season opener on Friday evening in Providence, R.I.

Lum and Abby Hustler finished with a goal apiece for the Scarlet and Brown, while Julia Gosling, Chloé Puddifant and Aly McLeod recorded an assist.

Late in the first period, the Friars picked up the original control off the faceoff but weren't able to break out of their zone. Gosling tried to get the initial shot off, but when the puck deflected back into the slot Hustler knocked it home for the first goal of the 2022-23 season and the 1-0 lead at 17:37 of the first.

St. Lawrence held a 13-8 edge in shots on goal after one period of play.

The Friars took control in the second period, as Caroline Peterson found the equalizer for Providence with the rebound off the backhanded shot just one minute and 19 seconds into the second period.
Sara Hjalmarsson then gave Providence the one-goal lead, as she scored off the feed from Noemi Neubauerova for the 2-1 lead at 12:55.

Katina Duscio nearly tied the game back up with a shot from the point just before heading to the bench, but Friars' goaltender Sandra Abstreiter made the glove save.

Despite the Friars leading 2-1, the Saints still held an advantage in shots on goal, leading 23-18 after two periods of play.

The Saints had numerous chances to tie it up throughout the third, but the tying moment would come off the stick of Taylor Lum, as she capitalized on a scramble with 3:12 remaining, tying the game 2-2. Assists on the play were credited to Puddifant and McLeod.

Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan and Abstreiter both made a key save in the last two minutes of play to send the first game of the season to overtime.

Morgan made another huge stop from KC Brooks to keep overtime going, but shortly after Kirchmair pulled the puck away from Morgan, after her initial save, and lifted the puck over her shoulder for the game winner with 1:32 remaining in overtime.

"We had a great first period and were unable to cash in on a lot of good chances," said head coach Chris Wells. "Providence regrouped and came out with different pace in the second, as they were able to jump out on us 2-1. We continued to have good opportunities and our resilience paid off to tie the game up. Once OT hit we had a number of rushes to finish the game off, but we weren't able to execute."

Kirchmair led the Friars with a goal and an assist in the win.

Morgan finished with 28 saves, while Abstreiter made 31.

St. Lawrence finished with a 60-48 advantage in shots and a 33-31 edge in shots on goal, while the Friars led 29-27 in faceoffs.

"All-in-all a good game for us to grow with as a team," Wells added. "Our execution will improve with each game no doubt."

Providence improved to 1-0-0 on the season, while the Saints fell to 0-1-0.

The Saints and the Friars will be back in action in Providence, tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
