Saints Rebound in an Offensive Display, Earn Series Split with Providence

Two goals by Rachel Bjorgan and Taylor Lum in the span of one minute and seventeen seconds sparked the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Providence College on Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I.

Lum, Kristina Bahl, and Abby Hustler all finished with a goal and an assist. Bjorgan and Kiley Mastel each had a goal, Katina Duscio dished two assists for her first career points, Chloé Puddifant also had two assists, and Julia Gosling finished with one assist for the Scarlet and Brown.

The Friars controlled most of the first period, and eventually, Isabelle Hardy put home a rebound off an initial stick save by Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan to give them a 1-0 lead. Morgan had to be sharp early, as Providence outshot the Saints 16-5 in the first period.

The Saints were able to endure Providence's initial push, and Aly McLeod drew a tripping penalty with 4:44 remaining in the first. After a point-blank save by Morgan, the Saints regrouped on the powerplay. Bahl sent Puddifant's pass top shelf to tie the game up late in the first period.

The second period had a frenetic pace with three goals in two minutes and ten seconds.

The Saints headed back to the power play six minutes into the middle frame after a slashing penalty. At the 12:50, Bjorgan tucked her shot near side under Providence's Sandra Abstreiter's glove to give the Saints their first lead of the game.

One minute and seventeen seconds later, Lum gathered Hustler's chip pass for a mini-breakaway and faked out Abstreiter with a beautiful deke to put St. Lawrence up 3-1.

Providence would respond a minute and a seven seconds later. Caroline Peterson backhanded a rebound over Morgan's blocker to cut the lead to one.

The Saints outshot the Friars 12-9 in the second period.

A back-and-forth beginning of the third period was broken open by Mastel's first career goal. Mastel received a beautiful cross ice pass through Providence's defense from Gosling, and she beat Abstreiter over her left shoulder, stretching the Saints lead to two.

St. Lawrence would contain Providence's comeback efforts, as Hustler put the exclamation point on the victory with an empty-net goal from center ice with 1.5 seconds remaining.

"Well we weathered a great effort by Providence and found a way to catch our stride and come out on top," said head coach Chris Wells. "Our execution was much better in key areas today and that allowed us to score some timely goals."

Morgan was strong throughout with a 31-save performance, while Abstreiter finished with 25.

The Saints were narrowly outshot 33 to 30, but were 2-for-3 on the powerplay, while Providence was 0-for-2.

"We had some big blocks and plays with their goalie out and that will help us as we learn to finish off games," Wells added. "A very solid weekend against a physical, hardworking opponent."

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 1-1, while Providence fell to 1-1.

The Saints return to Appleton for a big weekend against ranked opponents. The home opener is scheduled for Thursday, September 29 at 6:00 p.m against fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth, and on Saturday, they will take on No. 14 Penn State.
