Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pijpers Strikes Twice To Fuel 2-1 Win Over No. 13 SUNY Cortland

Sam Pijpers scored two goals in three minutes and ten seconds in the first half as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team knocked off No. 13 SUNY Cortland at T. Fred Holloway Field on Tuesday night.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 4-1-2 on the season, while the ranked Red Dragons fell to 4-3-1 with the loss.

"The team performed extremely well against a very good team tonight on the road," said head coach Mike Toshack "The entire team showed their quality as well as their tenacity to grind out the result. We now look forward to our Liberty League schedule ahead and Union on the road next Saturday!"

Cortland was first to the scoreboard in the game scoring at the 21:37 mark of the first half. Following a St. Lawrence foul, Riley Williams lined up for a free kick deep in Saints' territory. The senior hit a shot that knuckled through the air and past Ben Woelfinger to give his team the early lead.

The Saints eventually got on the board with under 10 minutes to go in the opening half of play. On the defensive end Sam Peacock made a great tackle to give St. Lawrence possession and allowed them to go on the counterattack. Miles Levy on the other end drew the eye of three Cortland defenders before dishing off to Pijpers, who was running down the left side. With a Red Dragon defender closing in, the junior fired a shot to the far-right post and in to tie the game at 1-1.

The tie game didn't last long as three minutes later the Scarlet and Brown would take the lead. The Saints' goal once again came off a turnover as a defender coughed up a pass to Marvin Sibanda deep in the Cortland end. The senior threaded a pass ahead to Pijpers, who this time beat his defender and rang it off the post to the left and past Luke van Galen to give St. Lawrence the 2-1 advantage.

Cortland came out strong in the second half looking for an equalizer getting three shots off that were blocked, wide, and saved. Following the Woelfinger save at 62:29, the Saints were able to keep the Red Dragons from getting any shots through until the 85:17 mark.

Yasin Choukri was able to get two shots off in the last five minutes but could not solve Woelfinger and the St. Lawrence back line as the clock struck 90 on their comeback effort.

Woelfinger stopped four shots in net for the Scarlet and Brown, while van Galen stopped two of the four shots he faced.

The Red Dragons held a narrow 10-8 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Cortland had two corner kicks to the Saints' one.

St. Lawrence will be back on the road this Saturday, September 24th as the Saints open their Liberty League slate with a matchup against Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. at 3:00 p.m.
