Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Coyne Scores Lone Goal in Home Opener

Sophomore Anna Coyne scored in the second quarter to lift the St. Lawrence field hockey team over Oswego on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.

Midway through the second quarter, Coyne collected the ball at midfield and dribbled up the right side. She cut inside past a defender and the diving goalkeeper, and buried the ball back handed into the cage for her first goal of the year.

The Saints dominated possession for most of the game with 19 shots on goal to the Lakers' nine. The Saints also had 14 penalty corners to Oswego's two.

Maggie Green looked to double the Saints lead early in the fourth quarter, tapping a rebounded shot towards what looked to be an open net, but an Oswego defender made a goal-line save to keep the score within one.

A few minutes later, Coyne found herself a few steps into the center of the shooting circle and lifted a shot forcing the keeper to make a glove save.

Oswego goalkeeper Erica Scheblein made 15 saves on the day. Cara Vredenburg made seven for the Saints to get the complete game shut-out.

Kara Dominick and Mayson Blondek each made defensive saves to aid in Vredenburg's clean sheet. Coyne's seven shots on goal led all players, and Green had three.

Head coach Fran Grembowicz
"I thought we played a really nice game. Our passing game was the best it's been all year. We did a good job defensively, only giving up two defensive corners all game, and Kara did a great job in net. We put a lot of shots on goal and kept the ball in our 50-yard line for a good portion of the game. Credit to the Oswego goalkeeper and a couple of their defensive players as well keeping the ball out. It was a great team effort, and we really made those connections on the field really well today. Plus, it was nice to be the first ones to score in our new nets."
