Marco Wong scored his first career goal in Scarlet and Brown as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team battled to a tie with the SUNY Potsdam Bears on Wednesday night at the Maxcy Hall Turf Field.
The Saints moved to 3-1-2 on the season, while the Bears went to 3-1-1 with the draw.
"We didn't start the match well today, but the team kept grinding" said head coach
Mike Toshack "We made a few adjustments then in the second half we started to look more like ourselves and take the game to Potsdam. We learned some good lessons; we didn't finish the game out and we didn't take care of things on the other end. Credit to SUNY Potsdam, their coach has done a good job with them."
St. Lawrence and Potsdam battled hard in the opening half with neither team being able to find many scoring looks. The game opened up later in the half with the Saints taking over the possession game. The Scarlet and Brown held a 5-4 shot advantage and a 3-2 edge in shots on goal after 45.
The Saints finally broke through late in the second half as a tic-tac-toe passing play led to the game's opening score.
Shane Hauck had possession of the ball in the Bears' zone and fed the ball ahead to
Marvin Sibanda, who relayed it to
Miles Levy. Levy received the ball and put a shot on frame that was saved by the fingertips of the keeper. The rebound landed on the foot of Wong, who tapped the ball home to give St. Lawrence the 1-0 lead with 15 minutes to go. Sibanda and Levy earned assists on the play.
The Bears would answer back a few minutes later when a Zach Cunningham cross found the head of Luke Clark. The header skipped past
George Charalambous to tie the game at 1-1.
With less than two minutes to go,
Sam Pijpers found himself with a great look in front of Lucas Schiel but his hard-hit shot rang off the crossbar to keep the game tied.
In the waning seconds of the contest, Pijpers once again was attacking as he looked for the go-ahead goal. The junior touched the ball ahead in the Potsdam box and was hauled down by a Bears' defender. The call was not made on the field however as the game was pushed to a draw.
Charalambous finished the game with three saves, while his counterpart stopped five.
The Scarlet and Brown had the 13-7 edge in shots and dominated possession as the Bears' focused on their defensive structure.
The Saints will have the weekend off as they prepare to travel to SUNY Cortland to face the Red Dragons on Tuesday, September 20th at 7:00 p.m.
