Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sibanda Scores a Brace, Saints Top Hartwick 3-2

Marvin Sibanda had two goals in less than a minute, and Sam Pijpers kept up his stellar play with the game-winning goal to lift the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Hartwick on Sunday afternoon in Oneonta, N.Y.

The Saints improve to 3-1-1, and the Hawks drop to 1-3-1.

"Another, 'grind it out' win for the team today!" said head coach Mike Toshack "Many new players in the lineup today, who stepped up big time. Again, we faced another very well-coached team in Hartwick. We now turn our attention to SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday."

Following Hartwick taking the 1-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes, Miles Levy sent in a cross from the right side of the field, skipping dangerously across the six-yard box. Max Mogul got to the ball just ahead of the keeper and touched the ballover to Sibanda, who tapped in the equalizer goal.

Less than a minute later, Levy was once again applying heavy pressure and streaked down the pitch, and cut into the box, when he was hauled down leading to the referee pointing to the penalty kick spot. Sibanda, was called upon to take the penalty kick low and didn't disappoint as his strike went past the keeper's left, giving the Scarlet and Brown the 2-1 lead.

Sibanda, who scored 11 goals a season ago, already has six goals in five games which leads the Liberty League. Mogul also is off to a tremendous start leading the league in assists with three, and is tied for third in the conference with three goals on the young campaign.

St. Lawrence was not done as five minutes later, Levy stole the ball off a defenders' foot and played a through-ball to Pjipers in scoring position. Pijpers rolled it under the charging keeper to make it 3-1, giving him his third goal of the season.

Hartwick would eventually get one back in the second half as a scrum in front of the St. Lawrence goal, and a sloppy tackle gave Hartwick a penalty kick, which was slotted to the lower left corner by Ansh Budhwar.

Ben Woelfinger was challenged twice more in the game and came up with two more saves for the Saints as they held on to a 3-2 victory.

Woelfinger had five saves in his 90 minutes in goal. Jackson Gilstrap stopped two of five shots in the opening 45 minutes of action for Hartwick, while Aden Razukiewicz stopped one shot in relief.

The Saints will be back in action on Wednesday, September 14th when the team travels up Route 11 to take on SUNY Potsdam at Maxcy Hall Turf Field in a 7:00 p.m. match.
